And then they giveth. With hurricane season now in full swing heartbreaks for homeowners mean early Christmas for Congress as the number of federally declared emergencies have spiked higher in this country. That means one thing for elected officials scrambling to hold onto power by using your money to buy votes?loading porkbarrel projects into emergency spending measures to help hurricane areas. And using the emergency measures to pay for all sorts of goodies for bureaucrats. So not just hurricanes mow down taxpayers?right behind them a Congressional pork wagon does too.

Meanwhile in the eastern Pacific cean Hurricane Jimena is expected to strike the southern Baja Peninsula as a major storm late Tuesday.

I wasn’t on vacation but deployed with the American Red Cross to help those affected by hurricanes. As the current hurricane season nears its peak I would like to share this memoir from 2008. If you remember Hurricanes Gustav Hanna and Ike there was a fairly long lead time while they milled about in the Caribbean Sea the Atlantic cean and the Gulf of Mexico before actually touching land. No one knew exactly where or when or if they would come ashore. The Federal Emergency Management Association and the Red Cross did not want to get caught unprepared so eight volunteers from the Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter four from tsego County were among several hundred “prepositioned” sent first to Mississippi then to Florida when Hanna was a threat and ultimately to Texas to help Ike’s evacuees. My team finally set up in College Station home of Texas A&M University to staff a small shelter in a church youth center.

The National ceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted one to two of those would be "major" hurricanes of Category 3 or higher with sustained winds of more than 110 miles per hour (177 km per hour). Small eddies of wind over the Great Salt Lake were about to collide with strong southerly winds in the Salt Lake Valley at the same time a powerful thunderstorm was forming above them. The result was a powerful tornado. As the twister began its nearly 4-mile 10-minute rampage through the heart of downtown Salt Lake City the Moores were sitting down to a wedding lunch at the Inn at Temple Square where the power didn’t even go out. The sensors are the basis of a Los Alamos National Laboratory project studying lightning inside a hurricane to improve the accuracy and timeliness of forecasts for people in a storm’s path. The effort is in the second of three years of research. The team is gearing up for the Atlantic hurricane season that peaks this month and in September. Hurricane watchers use satellite images and computer simulations to forecast a storm’s trajectory but it’s a challenge to predict how a hurricane will strengthen or weaken as it approaches land said lightning and radio scientist Xuan-Min Shao. Predictions of where a hurricane will hit have improved by 50 percent in the last two decades said Robert Atlas director of the National ceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Atlantic ceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory near Miami.
Related from Tianjigh: Man survives lightning strike in Mass.

After a few moments Elizabeth said she went upstairs to check on the tornado’s status and saw the funnel cloud traveling north. “We are all really lucky” said Elizabeth. “I have goosebumps thinking about it. There’s an actual place where it touched down. The trees were just ripped apart.
