NAA cuts hurricane forecast cites El Nino

government climate agency cut its 2009 Atlantic hurricane season forecast on Thursday predicting between seven and 11 tropical storms with three to six becoming hurricanes. The National ceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted one to two of those would be "major" hurricanes of Category 3 or higher with sustained winds of more than 110 miles per hour (177 km per hour). The agency had predicted in May that there would be nine to 14 tropical storms with four to seven becoming hurricanes and one to three strengthening into major hurricanes.
NC lawmakers approve hurricane insurance plan fix

– North Carolina legislators approved reforms to an overextended hurricane insurance plan that caps potential costs to insurers while spreading the risk of a disaster to every property owner in the state. The House voted 92-19 on Thursday to give the Beach Plan fix final approval. Lawmakers had nothing left to say after weeks of working on the hotly debated fix for the state-created but privately run plan that provides wind and homeowners insurance policies in 18 coastal counties.

The auditor’s report was released Friday. The Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the ffice of Rural Community Affairs administer $517 million dedicated to the recovery from 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In 2007 the State Auditor’s ffice found money was being paid out slowly and recommended improvements for the agencies. Friday’s report says only some of those recommendations have been achieved.
