The updated forecast from the team at Colorado State University released yesterday calls for an unexceptional season with hurricane activity near normal even though the Atlantic Basin remains in an active hurricane era. “It doesn’t have to be a hurricane to be a significant event as something we need to be prepared for; I think we learned that very clearly last year with Tropical Storm Fay. It had a huge impact and we lost about 15 of our fellow Floridians. “Crist toured the center and its recently renovated media room paid for with federal funds. The Florida Division of Emergency Management released a Mason-Dixon Poll assessing hurricane awareness and safety issues. Among the survey’s findings was that 67 percent of Floridians said they had a disaster plan in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm after the 2008 hurricane season.

Red Cross in Dallas does “what if” tornado film

The 18-minute movie called “F5″ refers to the designation for the most powerful tornadoes. The film uses fictional characters to show how lives change and what the community can do to help during tornado disasters. The film premieres Thursday night at the Studio Movie Grill in Dallas then will be posted on the Internet. Red Cross spokeswoman Anita Foster said Wednesday that volunteers produced the film with help of the Southwest Community of Motion Picture Artists.

christy@newssun.comSEBRING — Hurricane season started Monday but the Highlands County Emergency perations Center was preparing last week with a hurricane drill. ther counties across the state joined in the conference call with the National Hurricane Center three different National Weather Service locations and state government officials. “We had all the different conference calls that we do as if there was a real hurricane” said Erin Gercken who works at the EC and participated in the calls. In the early stages of the mock hurricane track the eye was going over Lake Placid. “We were lucky” Gercken said.
