Season’s 1st tropical depression forms in Atlantic

The National Weather Service counts the depression as the first of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season which officially begins June 1. The depression’s maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph. Forecasters say it could strengthen to a tropical storm Thursday night or Friday but then is expected to weaken or dissipate by Saturday. Forecasters expect the depression to stay over the Atlantic where it’s moving toward the northeast near 16 mph.

Attorney Tim Johnson says Phyllis Ann Taylor’s sentence is one of the longest imposed nationwide related to fraudulent claims for hurricane assistance. District Judge David Hittner sentenced Taylor on Wednesday to 33 months for mail fraud and 24 months for aggravated identity theft. Authorities say the 28-year-old Taylor filed a dozen claims for assistance after Katrina and Rita using slight variations of her name.
