‘Trouble’: A new view of Hurricane Katrina
Philadelphia Inquirer
YU MAY think you’ve seen everything there is to see about Hurricane Katrina but unless you’ve seen "Trouble the Water" the Sundance-winning documentary that makes its television premiere tonight on HB you probably haven’t seen the view from the attic. That’s the attic where Kim Roberts huddled with friends family and neighbors in New rleans’ Ninth Ward after the levees failed turning the street where they lived into a raging river. Roberts was an aspiring rapper with a new video camera in August 2005 when the 24-year-old began recording storm preparations showing off the ice in the freezer clearly unaware that her entire kitchen would soon be under water. Thanks to a serendipitous encounter in a Red Cross shelter with filmmakers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal the endearingly outspoken Roberts and her equally engaging husband Scott are now stars front and center in the kind of reality show most of us hope won’t be needing a second season. Joining forces with the couple and splicing news footage and their own with Roberts’ video Lessin and Deal paint a picture of the Ninth Ward before during and after the devastation of Katrina.

comp –> WASHINGTN — Craig Fugate who led Florida’s disaster response during back-to-back hurricanes told senators at his confirmation hearing Wednesday for the top post at the Federal Emergency Management Agency that he’ll hold the troubled agency to a ”much higher standard of success” than its Hurricane Katrina performance. Fugate — President Barack bama’s choice to head an agency roundly criticized for its performance during the 2005 hurricane season — received a friendly reception from senators who warned him that there’s plenty of work left to be done at the agency. Fugate pledged in prepared remarks to redouble the agency’s efforts to “protect against prepare for respond to and recover from all hazards. ‘Judging FEMA’s future success on the basis of whether it is `better than Katrina’ is not viable” Fugate said. “This standard does not in my opinion meet our sworn commitment to the American people.
