Ivor van Heerden the recently dismissed deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center was one of the most persistent scientific voices warning of the inadequacy of New rleans levees to protect the city from a major hurricane prior to 2005. After Katrina breached those defenses that year Van Heerden who holds a Ph. in marine sciences from LSU led Team Louisiana an independent state-sanctioned investigation of the causes of the catastrophic flooding. The resulting report pointed the finger at inadequate design and construction of levees by the Army Corps of Engineers.

– Many people in Mena are in need of some extra help. Not only have many lot their homes but they’ve also lost their jobs and their livelihoods. The tornado hit the area’s economic backbone hard. The storm has taken its toll on so many levels physically emotionally and financially. About 200 homes were destroyed but several businesses were demolished as well. ne of the companies that was slammed by the tornado R&D Industries is located in Mena’s hard-hit industrial park. The business’ main building was ripped right open by the tornado putting the company out of business temporarily.
