Ted Strickland wants hioans to heed the tornado sirens even though it’s only a test. hio’s emergency alert system will sound at 9:50 a. Wednesday in a statewide tornado drill part of hio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. The observance comes each year just before the state’s April-July tornado season the peak months for twisters to hit hio.

After Ike spring breakers come to Galveston

LZAN – 5 hours ago HUSTN (AP) — Tourism officials are calling this month’s spring break on Galveston Island — which is still rebuilding after Hurricane Ike — a success. fficials estimate Galveston could experience an economic impact of $36 million thanks to spring break visitors who came to the island over the past three weeks. “That’s slightly down from last year but more than what was projected to be” said RoShelle Gaskins a spokeswoman for the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. The projected economic impact was good news for Galveston which continues recovering after Ike’s 12-foot storm surge rumbled ashore near the city on Sept. 13 flooding or damaging a majority of the island’s homes and businesses.

Tuesday afternoon friends family even strangers pull together. They are taking action to pick up what mother nature blew apart in a violent tornado. New financial reports released by the state Department of Insurance on Monday indicated that most companies took a big hit in 2008 primarily because of Hurricane Ike which blasted Galveston and the Houston area in September. In terms of property damage Ike was the costliest in Texas history but there were also sizable losses from hailstorms in North Texas last spring and Hurricane Dolly in South Texas last summer. verall the industry had an average loss ratio of 127 percent in 2008 according to the state reports.

But Rosenlund said he is not as confident about businesses. “I am concerned about businesses that may not have set forth a concrete plan for sheltering their customers and employees” Rosenlund said. Informing them is part of his latest effort so is making sure everyone is prepared to survive in the hours and days after a tornado hits. “Preparedness begins with selfsufficiency. A 72 hour kit is the first step” said Rosenlund. It should include food and water enough for the entire family and even the pets. Also a first aid kit and blankets.
