New financial reports released by the state Department of Insurance on Monday indicated that most companies took a big hit in 2008 primarily because of Hurricane Ike which blasted Galveston and the Houston area in September. In terms of property damage Ike was the costliest in Texas history but there were also sizable losses from hailstorms in North Texas last spring and Hurricane Dolly in South Texas last summer. verall the industry had an average loss ratio of 127 percent in 2008 according to the state reports.

The tornado-laden storm system moved northeast through the eastern quarter of the state hitting Lincoln and maha about rush hour before moving into Iowa. Television station KPTM in maha reported that the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency had confirmed five people were hurt and several buildings were damaged near Eagle east of Lincoln. NEMA spokesperson Logan Lueking said late Monday that it appeared the five people were in a car that was hit by debris from a storm-damaged building. The extent of the injuries was unknown. Lueking said there were no other reports of injuries or major damage in Nebraska although information was still coming in.

Tornado hits western Iowa house

The Harrison County Emergency Management Agency says the housesustained damage but no one was injured in the storm which blewin from. Kim Crispin public information officer for the agency says allthe house’s occupants have been accounted for. Crispin says someunoccupied farm buildings near Missouri Valley were also damaged.

With heavy snowfall and wind gusts to 60 mph at times widespread blizzard conditions are expected through at least Tuesday morning for central and western parts of the Dakotas northwestern Nebraska eastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana. utside of the area of heaviest snow and strongest winds moderate to heavy snowfall will stretch into central Wyoming and even western Colorado. Winter storm warning and advisories are widespread today through the central and northern Rockies. Severe thunderstorm threat — While the heavy snow falls on the northwest side of this storm system severe thunderstorms will be the main concern to the east and southeast of the low’s track.
