utside his office the recently remodeled lobby of Moody National Bank still has some folding tables and make-do furniture especially near the vault which couldn’t be opened for a week after Hurricane Ike ravaged the island because floodwaters rusted the door shut. Pierson Moody Bank’s president was more concerned though with furnishing local businesses the financing they needed to rebuild after Hurricane Ike. In the days after the floodwaters receded Galveston’s community banks like Moody’s took the lead in financing the recovery. “We had a plan that was critical to get funding to our businesses so they could rebuild” Pierson said. “We knew it was important to get the money out. ”Moody National and other banks made millions of dollars in loans to business owners providing what amounted to unsecured bridge financing to help with repairs while they waited on insurance settlements and loans from the U.

Thunderstorms are quite common around here but tornadoes are pretty rare in Virginia and North Carolina. Strong tornadoes are extremely rare. However a strong EF 3 tornado hit Suffolk last April so we know first hand that they can happen here. If you are ever in the path of a tornado you need to know what to do to keep you safe. First let’s discuss the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning: A tornado WATCH means that conditions are favorable in your area for the development of a tornado. A tornado WARNING means that a either a tornado has been spotted or that doppler radar is showing rotation indicating the possible development of a tornado. If a tornado warning is issued for your area you must take action immediately! If you are in a building when a tornado warning is issued do not leave the building.

It was when three supercells spawned a series of tornadoes that dispatched that fury — more than 50 tornadoes that barreled through not only Texas and klahoma but through Kansas Arkansas Missouri Louisiana Nebraska Mississippi Tennessee Kentucky Indiana and Alabama. It was the perfect storm and Wichita Falls was in the middle of it all. An F4 tornado hit Wichita Falls late in the afternoon that day Terrible Tuesday killing 42 people in Wichita County and another 12 in Wilbarger County as it dug its heels over almost 47 miles leaving unimaginable damage in its path. It’s been 30 years since that day and the Wichita Falls Museum of North Texas History is remembering the Terrible Tuesday that left its indelible mark in the area with its latest exhibit “Gone With the Big Wind: 30th Anniversary of the 1979 Tornado. The exhibit is mainly a photography exhibit with countless 8×10 black-and-white images displayed at the museum showing the destruction: cars pummeled as if they were made of tin and frames of houses surrounded by a swirl of debris. Also on display is the Red River Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America tapestry that’s on loan to the museum for the exhibit. It has moved from its permanent display home at the Wichita Falls Public Library to the museum for the next few months.
