Britain — home of the world’s first working railway steam locomotive — has long been a train-loving nation and that was evident among the swarm of admirers at Thursday’s ceremony. The volunteers had raised more than 3 million pounds ($4. 3 million) and spent 19 years building Tornado. They regard it as the 50th engine of the Peppercorn A1 class a modernized version of the 49 predecessors which were all scrapped by 1966 two years before Britain’s national rail system stopped steam operations. “I have nothing but the greatest admiration for the team of people who over the last 19 years have been doing their utmost to produce this remarkable achievement” said Charles. He called it “a tribute to all of those incredible British engineering skills which made this country so famous.
Tornado Damage Drastically Higher than Initial Estimates

The damage estimate is much higher than the Insurance Commissioner’s initial estimate of $10 million. The National Weather Service too is starting to piece together a more complete picture of what happened on Wednesday and Thursday. Trisha Palmer one of their meteorologists says the service has just finished an assessment:PALMER: With our preliminary tornado count so far is 10 tornadoes. That’s 10 in north and central Georgia. The state of emergency has been declared for Hancock Jasper Thomas and Warren Counties three of which lie just southeast of Metro Atlanta’s core. The tornado hit northern Colorado with winds between 136 and 165 mph. Fifty-two-year-old scar Manchester was killed at a campground near Greeley. Eighty homes were destroyed and 770 others were damaged in Windsor a town of 19000. Windsor spent $2 million to repair town buildings.

Ricki Barker ricki. barker@albanyherald. com THMASVILLE An F-2 tornado with winds of 113 to 157 miles per hour wreaked havoc on Thomas and Grady counties early Thursday morning. The storm began in the Florida Panhandle and grew rapidly as it traveled through Seminole and Decatur counties between midnight and 12:30 a. The severe weather would go on to become a tornado that would hit southeastern Grady County and continue along a 16-mile trek across southern Thomas County leaving what Thomas County Commission Chairman Josh Herring called “devastation” in its wake. Thomasville was especially hard hit.
