In rebuilding since Hurricane Katrina homes are being fitted with solar panels organic farming is catching on and the city’s got a new fleet of hybrid buses. n the flanks of those buses a catch phrase — Cleaner Smarter — could be the anthem for the movement by institutions and individuals to slowly turn the city’s environmentally-unfriendly image around. Maybe the filthy water that flooded 80 percent of the city after the catastrophe in August 2005 made residents rethink the way to rebuild. r maybe it’s the tax credits or energy price spikes. Whatever the reason the hurricane created a testing ground for ideas and initiatives.

Former President Bill Clinton who also addressed the convention spoke of the efforts he and the elder Bush have worked on together to lead fundraising after disasters such as the southeast Asian tsunami Hurricane Katrina and last summer’s Hurricane Ike. He also said he had developed a good working relationship with the younger Bush. “I told him that if he thought he could just go home to that ranch and fool with the brush around the house he was wrong that we intended for him to work just like we did” Clinton said.

Before Hurricane Katrina it wasn’t unusual for French Quarter streets to be littered and foul-smelling after a night’s partying. But the scrubbing begun after Katrina has helped entice visitors to the crucial tourism area. Mayor Ray Nagin said Monday the city is suspending mechanical street sweeping and a service in which a truck sprays water to clear garbage and other debris. ther services including pressure washing and manual street cleaning will continue. Even with the service cuts the area will still get more attention than was provided before the 2005 storm.
