Now comes the hard task of paying for it. When lawmakers convene Tuesday they’ll face the financial devastation left by the Category 2 storm that walloped the upper Gulf Coast on Sept. 13 devastating Galveston and nearby counties. They’ll look to restructure the state’s windstorm insurance association which is filling in the gap left by private insurers who stopped issuing policies in some Gulf coast counties and consider whether to put money into a state disaster fund that Galveston officials found out the hard way was empty.

Scott Applewhite)Bush comments on Katrina sound sour in New rleansBy BECKY BHRER – 2 hours ago NEW RLEANS (AP) — President George W. Bush can defend the federal government’s response to Hurricane Katrina. But to Gertrude LeBlanc the view from her home in the city’s Lower 9th Ward is all the evidence she needs to believe it was a failure. A row of concrete foundations is all that’s left where her neighbors’ houses once stood. “Bush didn’t give a damn what we got” said the 73-year-old who says she rebuilt her bright yellow house with the neat yard with help from a church group and the “little bit” in federal aid she got from the state-run program meant to help hurricane-affected homeowners Road Home. “To me black folks weren’t handled right but we can’t worry about it.

Jury convicts Hurricane Katrina evacuee

html FRT WRTH Texas — A Tarrant County jury has convicted a Hurricane Katrina evacuee of capital murder in the shooting death of a person police say was a drug dealer. Joemar Jackson was found guilty Monday of the robbery-slaying of 29-year-old Eric Witt. State District Judge Elizabeth Berry sentenced Jackson to life in prison with no possibility of parole because prosecutors waived the death penalty the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Tuesday in its online edition. Witt was killed June 23 2007 by four men looking for drugs and money during a home invasion-robbery. Jackson’s relatives said that he was home with them the night Witt died but prosecutors said Jackson was identified by witnesses who described clothing that was later found in his house.

Department of Agriculture estimates overall production will be down 1 million tons and yields lower too in part due to Hurricane Gustav which made landfall in south Louisiana as a Category 2 storm on Labor Day. Louisiana is the only sugar cane-producing state expecting lower yields than in 2007 USDA said in its January report — though not nearly as bad as had been feared. Even with Louisiana’s situation production nationally is expected to be higher with Florida Hawaii and Texas the other ‘cane-producing states tracked by USDA each expected to produce more than in 2007. If not for Gustav and even Hurricane Ike to a degree Louisiana would have had a bumper crop said Jim Simon general manager of the American Sugar Cane League. Preliminary state estimates pegged losses at more than 12 percent of the cane crop or about $73 million of the $583 million harvest estimated before Gustav.

The march is scheduled for Saturday; the holiday is celebrated on Monday. Cahill said the hurricane damaged about 75 percent of all structures on the island and that population has decreased dramatically based on a 40 percent drop in water usage after the storm. “We just have to roll with the punches” said parade organizer Ennis Williams president of the ld Central Cultural Center. Williams says everyone in Galveston will have to make sacrifices until things get back to normal. “We know it’s like that now but it won’t be like that forever” he said. The city usually donates about $1500 to cover the cost of cleaning up police protection barricades and street closures.

Hi my name is Danielle Phillips and I am 15 years old. I am a weather person in my family that loves storms. I want to chase tornadoes when I was about 4 years old. When I first watch a tornado show but it was on The Weather Channel and the show was called Storm Stories. It is about many people telling stories about the storm they were in. Sometimes it will give you a quiz. I was in a tornado but the tornado was actually weak which it was an F0 which it can go up to 0 to 100 mph winds sometimes. I know possibly everything about storms, actors, movies, animals a lot more than my family that does not know. I am tracking a tornado down that it was last night when the tornado hit at Florida, Alabama and Mississippi keys had a tornado warning last night. I live in Red Lodge Montana. My 2 uncles and my 2 cousins Jade, Courtney, Uncle Eddy and Bob live in Florida. Eddy, Jade and Courtney lives in Deerfield Beach Florida and I don’t remember where Bob lives. I will track this tornado down to see the damage and how many people, animals were killed and homeless. I need to know so I can scan it and find out if it was an F0, F1, F2, F3, F4, or an F5. I could tell the damage and the wind speed to figure that out. I am doing a Tornado Update for 2009 not for a class but I just need to know.
