AG clears 4 of 15 firms of hurricane price-gouging
Houston Chronicle United States
html LITTLE ROCK Ark. — Four of 15 firms subpoenaed in an investigation of possible price-gouging at gas stations as Hurricane Ike approached Texas have been cleared of any wrongdoing Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said Wednesday. McDaniel issued subpoenas in September seeking information from the companies on what they had paid wholesalers for the gasoline they sold to consumers for comparison to retail prices so his office could determine if the firms sought excessive profits. He said at the time that his investigation was prompted by telephone complaints from 1450 people about suddenly high gas prices plus more than 2400 complaints sent by e-mail or text message. A news release from McDaniel’s office Wednesday said all 15 companies subpoenaed had responded but more information and documentation was being sought from most of them. “However four parties have provided information and documentation demonstrating that their conduct did not violate the Arkansas Price-Gouging Law or the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act” the release said.
3-Share plan survived Hurricane Ike
Daily News – Galveston County TX
We were at 470 members with appointments to add another 10 members by Sept. Hurricane Ike made landfall that Friday evening displacing many of us. As a relative newcomer to the Gulf Coast I had never personally witnessed the devastation a hurricane could cause. As the executive director of the 3-Share Plan whose existence was a mere three months old I did not have time to develop a disaster plan. As Ike approached I relied on the help of one of my partner organizations the UTMB Health Care Systems under the direction of Melba Stiefel. The UTMB Health Care Systems disaster plan called for establishing a toll free number at MediView the third party administrator whose office is in Austin.

It is on the dimly lit stage that she can forget the loss of her actual home in New Orleans East to Hurricane Katrina and the many moves she and her family have made since. She is so comfortable that she has been in several performances at the high school including playing a talkative Christmas stocking in Thursday night’s “Winter Spectacular” production at the high school. “It’s an escape from what I have been through. I just love becoming an entirely different person” she said as she rehearsed with her peers. The student playing the stocking Thursday night spent much of her childhood in New Orleans East where she loved eating Cajun food and hanging out with family and friends.

Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP – Not Even A Hurricane…

Even one of the sturdy-looking manufacturer display tents in the infield collapsed after buckling from the strain of withstanding continuous gale-force winds. But despite the awful conditions there was still a significant number of spectators inside IMS’ expansive confines with most of the grandstands around the racecourse looking full and the infield viewing areas appearing well-populated. And it should be noted that there was plenty of advance warning of bad weather via the TV news stations for days leading up to the event with the remnants of Hurricane Ike slated to run through the area smack dab on race weekend. But that did little to dampen the spirits of MotoGP-hungry Midwestern race fans who flocked to the Indianapolis area on just as many bikes as automobiles weather be damned. It was definitely great to see. Indianapolis Motor Speedway doesn’t publicize spectator counts as a matter of policy but they made an exception for the Indy GP: more than 91000 people attended on Sunday with a weekend total of 174000. This makes the inaugural Indianapolis MotoGP event rank as the largest motorcycle roadrace event in the U.
Scientists’ guess on hurricanes raised insurance costs
Houston Chronicle United States
There the scientists were asked to predict Atlantic hurricane activity for 2006 to 2010. They estimated hurricane activity would be significantly higher than the long-term historical average calling for 40 percent more landfalls of major U. hurricanes than normal during the period. Shortly thereafter the firm Risk Management Solutions or RMS increased its “modeled insurance losses” which help establish rates for insurers and re-insurers by 40 percent.
Katrina recovery: new push to help small landlords
The Associated Press
(AP) — An $849 million Hurricane Katrina recovery program hobbled by red tape and the national credit crunch will seek to issue rebuilding money directly to small landlords without the involvement of banks officials said Wednesday. The Louisiana Small Rental Program was designed to restore 18000 properties but has distributed only 433 grants so far. The program had required banks to release rebuilding loans to small landlords who then applied for reimbursement grants through the program. The owners of shotgun homes and cottages that kept rent cheap in New Orleans for generations found it virtually impossible to obtain those recovery loans needed for rebuilding after the devastating 2005 storm. The credit crunch only exacerbated the problem as financial institutions tightened lending requirements.
