Galveston Police Chief Charles Wiley said three public works employees and 11 officers boarded large trucks and rushed to Oleander Homes to help evacuate residents stranded by the rapidly rising water. Each public works employees received a Commander’s Coin of Excellence and certificates while the officers received the department’s highest honor metal of valor pins Wiley said.
