Two doors down from Johnson’s home Smith replaced a home the tornado had flattened. On the other side of town he said they rebuilt a home that had been crushed into the shape of an egg. Many people who are starting over in new homes are asking for shelters or requesting hurricane straps #8212; metal clips designed to better anchor roofs during hurricanes. In Lafayette Smith said builders call them “tornado straps. ”
Smith rode out the tornado with his wife and two young daughters inside their home in the Brattontown community. “It came 500 yards in front of my house” he said but their home was unscathed. His parents weren’t so lucky; their roof was damaged by the storm.

AHN Staff Houston TX (AHN) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to shoulder the cost of Hurricane Ike clean-up in Texas for six more months. Rick Perry asked the federal government to pick the tab for 16 months but FEMA approved only for six months. When Perry requested for 16 months from FEMA the agency at that time was considering shouldering 75 percent of the clean-up bill with the remaining portion to be shouldered by local governments. But some small towns may not have the funds to pay for the 25 percent and lead them to bankruptcy.
