Border Patrol plans to check IDs in hurricane evacuations
KCEN-TV – May 16, 2008
Customs officials say they plan to continue checking the citizenship of people at inland highway checkpoints about 75 miles north of the border in the event of a hurricane evacuation. A CBP spokesman says those found to be in the country illegally will be sent to detention centers out of the hurricane’s path. The policy raised concerns with many South Texans who fear that families may not flee from danger because they don’t want to leave behind a member who’s in the country illegally. Governor Rick Perry’s office confirms that the state would prefer the checkpoints be closed during evacuations.
… Solution Supports ”Spring Blitz” Demonstra…
Earthtimes – May 16, 2008
- (Business Wire) CoreStreet, the leader in credential validation solutions, today announced that its CoreStreet PIVMAN Solution served a critical role as part of the May 15 “Spring Blitz” Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)-201 interoperable credential usage demonstration, hosted by Tampa Fire Rescue with technical support provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Taking place at the Tampa Fire Training Academy in Tampa, Florida, the demonstration simulated routine and emergency access for hurricane disaster sites as well as the Super Bowl, marking it as the first demonstration focused on the use of credential validation for routine and emergency access in a commercial scenario. One of the primary goals of “Spring Blitz” was to demonstrate routine and emergency access to a secured facility for Super Bowl emergency response officials by validating FIPS-201 interoperable credentials. Within the scenario there were two zones: the staging zone and portions of the interior with limited access. Participants entered and exited both Super Bowl zones via electronic validation of their FIPS-201 “just-in-time” credentials. This scenario demonstrates mutual aid response to a highly secure zone in the event of an emergency.
Nearly $1 million raise for Suffolk tornado victims

Many groups now are trying to determine how the money can best meet victims’ long-term needs. Tywana German, director of the Suffolk United Way office, said her organization has raised $600,000 and is talking to residents and business owners about insurance and other issues. Spokesman Rob Shapiro said the Red Cross has raised about $150,000. Most of that went toward helping victims just after the tornado hit on April 28. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. On track for the crown
Charleston Gazette – May 16, 2008
Neither has ever won a track title, girls or boys. Hurricane, in fact, owns just two state championships in any sport (baseball 2002, golf 2007). But the Redskins are solid favorites in AAA and the Irish seem to have as good a shot as anyone in a single-A field where a razor's edge separates the top three teams – Williamstown, Charleston Catholic and St. And that doesn't even include five-time defending champ Doddridge County, which also figures to be in the mix. Hurricane, though, does have a coach with quite a bit of championship experience in Steve Caldwell, who led Dunbar's boys to seven titles in the school's last eight years of existence (1983-90)… And that doesn't even include five-time defending champ Doddridge County, which also figures to be in the mix. Hurricane, though, does have a coach with quite a bit of championship experience in Steve Caldwell, who led Dunbar's boys to seven titles in the school's last eight years of existence (1983-90). Caldwell's best finish in 13 seasons with the Redskins girls was third last year. "Hurricane doesn't have a history of winning state championships,'' Caldwell said, "[but] I know what to expect and everything. There's so much that can happen. ''The Redskins can get a jump on the opposition today because they're strong in some of the early final events (see schedule, Page 4B).
Cheap oil may be history as $100 becomes norm
MarketWatch – May 16, 2008
For now, there are no accurate reports of what facilities have been affected, and “until the true situation is clarified, it will remain unclear just how much damage to production was done,” he said. The implications from the earthquake could be “very similar” to what was seen following Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, according to Ben Smith, president of First Enercast Financial. The quake and hurricane are both “natural disasters that hit right in the heart of their respective countries’ energy output, initially shutting supply,” he said. But in the months following Katrina, “data showed the storm actually knocked out more energy demand than supply. ”
In China’s case, it’s lost a “good amount of domestic supply, but the devastation will likely cause an even higher degree of demand destruction over the recovery period,” Smith said. “The supply can come back online much faster than it takes to rebuild the city. ”
If any damage was done to China’s energy infrastructure, then it’s very likely the country will rely on increased imports to make up for any shortfalls in the near term, said Hartmann.
