Are you prepared for a tornado?

But the possibility of a storm still exists. “We’ve been very lucky,” said Ernie Ostuno, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. “Eventually, the luck runs out and we will have a tornado outbreak. What to do before the storm• Develop a plan for you and your family at work, home and when outdoors. • Have frequent drills. • Know the area in which you live and have a map nearby to follow weather bulletins. • Have a battery-operated radio in case of electrical outages… Jackson County last had a tornado in March 2006. The storm, considered moderate on an intensity scale, destroyed a barn and some out buildings in Leoni Township, tore the porch off a house and busted apart trees. It was the fourth tornado, all of them of lower intensity, to hit the county since June 1991, Ostuno said. One of them, a June 1982 storm, was the last fatal tornado in the area. The storm, which moved through Munith into Chelsea, killed a boy who blew off a porch in Wash-tenaw County, Ostuno said. Before that, two people died in a tornado that trekked across Hillsdale and Jackson counties in April 1974. That storm was part of the worst tornado outbreak in the United States, with 148 tornadoes killing more than 300 people from Illinois to Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.

University of Miami’s CSTARS to host valuable hurricane, typhoon…
EurekAlert – EurekAlert (press release) – May 15, 2008
The CSA has been collecting RADARSAT-1 data over hurricanes and typhoons through its “Hurricane Watch” program since 1998. CSTARS has been a partner since 2004 and provides near-real time RADARSAT-1 images to the “Hurricane Watch” program. In this period, 160 hurricane and typhoon images focusing on the eye of the storm or edge of the eyewall, from around the world, were selected and processed. Researchers will have an opportunity to identify new approaches and applications for the study of hurricane dynamics using this valuable dataset. This
research resource will also help investigators to become better acquainted with the use of remotely sensed data from RADARSAT-2 and other international missions for the future. ###

About CSTARS
Launched in 2003, CSTARS is a major program of the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School, one of the world’s premier marine and atmospheric research institutions. Employing low earth-orbiting satellite systems, CSTARS scientists conduct research using remotely-sensed data.
