Description Part of the UK Device Software Optimisation (DSO) programme, which aims to implement an open-architecture approach to avionics, the employment of Wind River Systems’ General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition software in the Tornado Advanced Radar Display Information System (TARDIS) will facilitate faster and more cost-effective development of advanced software for the system. TARDIS replaces the 1970s-vintage Combined Radar and Projected Map Display (CRPMD) in the rear cockpit with a new radar and map processor on a flat-panel display. The VxWorks software provides an underlying operating system to control the radar display, inserting a software foundation between the existing hardware and the display application software to create a ruggedised software platform. The system takes all the input signals (from the radar, map-projector and inertial navigation systems) to present them in the moving-map display.
