Storm surge, the massive wall of water carried onto land by a hurricane, is considered perhaps its most destructive element and greatest threat to the lives of people who ignore evacuation orders in vulnerable coastal areas. Bill Read, who was appointed head of the Miami-based U. forecasting center in January, said a planned program will couple a Google application with storm surge data that meteorologists have used for years to determine the flooding threat from any category of storm. “People can plug in their address and see at what level they are at risk,” Read told Reuters in an interview.

Though a tornado swept over the nearby Georgia Dome and caused the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament to move to Georgia Tech over the weekend, nearby Philips Arena was essentially unharmed. “There was no structural damage to our facility,” arena vice president Trey Feazell said. “We had some panels we lost from a transition wall in our lower and our upper levels on the International [Drive] side across from the World Congress Center. Our parking deck, the one they keep showing on TV, had some damage, but we were fortunate to escape structural damage. Marietta Street, which borders the arena’s side across from Centennial Olympic Park, remained closed on Wednesday.

Tornado squadrons going to Iraq

The RAF said each of the squadrons will take its turn spending two months on duty. The main duties for the Tornados will be to patrol the skies over Iraq, and to help the ground forces with missions. The operation will see 14 Squadron, followed by 12 (Bomber) Squadron then 617 Squadron deployed.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Jackson,Mississippi, claims Countrywide threatened to foreclose on homesif owners didn't agree to loan modifications that cost them moremoney. Countrywide didn't tell homeowners that the deferrals hadto be fully repaid after 60 days, according to the lawsuit filedMarch 14. If the deferred amounts weren't paid, borrowers wouldbe “forced into onerous work-out agreements or loanmodifications that would cost them more, sometimes significantlymore, in total dollars than simply continuing to make theirmortgage payments,'' according to the suit.
