Gordon Hoffman Tech Police Department deputy chief said campus sirens will be tested for one minute as part of a required yearly test… The university uses warning sirens Hoffman said because they are “existing equipment that we have available to us and it’s one of the best means that we know of to notify people. “However Kathleen Finley emergency management assistant with the City of Lubbock said though the city does have emergency management procedures in place to warn citizens of severe weather these plans do not involve warning sirens. Finley said she believes tornado sirens generally are not as effective as other methods of communications including NOAA weather radios and the media. The city estimates sirens would cost approximately $30000 to $40000 each she said with approximately the same amount needed to maintain one every year. She said based on the city’s population and land area approximately 150 sirens would be required. But Kevin Starbuck emergency management coordinator for Amarillo said the city of Amarillo has a system of 85 sirens in and around the city to warn citizens of numerous hazards including evacuation for wildfire warning of a hazardous material release as well as tornadoes. “That provides us pretty adequate coverage in the city limits and we do cover some in the counties” Starbuck said.
