With 50 entries confirmed from 21 different countries the championships double as the final Olympic qualifier for the multi-hull class. Twelve of the maximum 16 Olympic Tornado berths have already been decided. New Zealand entries include former Olympic medallists Aaron McIntosh Bruce Kendall and Rex Sellers. McIntosh a world champion and Olympic bronze medallist as a windsurfer switched to the Tornado in 2003. He sails this regatta with Mark Kennedy as crew. Kendall who sails with Blair Tuke won Olympic bronze in 1984 in Los Angeles and Olympic gold in 1988 in Seoul.

Following the devastation wrought during last year’s record-breaking season especially by Katrina Rita and Wilma people going to the Caribbean or to Florida this summer and autumn are naturally worried that 2006 may turn out to be as bad and that Tony Gordon or any of the 20 other names on the list will ruin their holiday plans. Until last year there was only ever one serious forecast for the coming season and that was produced by the doyen of hurricane forecasters Dr William Gray of Colorado State University. He has been predicting storms for more than two decades. This year for obvious reasons everyone else has jumped on the bandwagon.

The storm conditions let up as a cool down took affect… The rain chances will come to an end just in time for the weekend on Friday afternoon.
