Nicaragua: ADRA Distributes Medicines to 1000000 Hurricane Felix…

ADRA partner organizations Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) along with the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy donated the medicines worth $44492146 which are expected to benefit more than 1000000 residents directly affected by Hurricane Felix and the subsequent flooding. ADRA is focusing its continued efforts on the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) a coastal region of Nicaragua populated primarily by the indigenous Miskitos. Hurricane Felix’s category five winds devastated the region’s infrastructure and crops crippling the already impoverished and marginalized Miskitos communities. ADRA Nicaragua began distributing the donated medicines including antibiotics and anti-parasitic medications on Monday January 28 2008. In coordination with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA) the medicine will be distributed to health centers and hospitals in Nueva Segovia Madriz Esteli Chinandega Managua Matagalpa and Leon. “This donation is a much-needed boost for a large part of the Nicaraguan population” shared Plinio Vergara country director for ADRA Nicaragua. “The hurricane damaged and contaminated main water sources such as community wells and rivers… In coordination with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA) the medicine will be distributed to health centers and hospitals in Nueva Segovia Madriz Esteli Chinandega Managua Matagalpa and Leon. “This donation is a much-needed boost for a large part of the Nicaraguan population” shared Plinio Vergara country director for ADRA Nicaragua. “The hurricane damaged and contaminated main water sources such as community wells and rivers. Many residents had no choice but to use the polluted water for drinking cooking and bathing which exposed them to parasites and water-borne diseases. The medicines provided by our partner organizations will help restore their health. “More than 100 people were killed in Nicaragua when Hurricane Felix made landfall September 4 2007. ADRA responded immediately with first aid kits blankets food baskets and temporary housing for 1200 beneficiaries in the affected region.

Increased hurricane activity linked to sea surface warming
PhysOrg.com – Jan 30, 2008
com: The link between changes in the temperature of the sea’s surface and increases in North Atlantic hurricane activity has been quantified for the first time. The research – carried out by scientists at UCL (University College London) and due to be published in Nature on January 31 – shows that a 0. 5°C increase in sea surface temperature can be associated with a ~40 per cent increase in hurricane activity.

Officials believe tornado caused Posey damage
courierpress.com – Jan 30, 2008
“It appears like there was a tornado that set down here in northeastern Posey County” said Ron Fields special liaison officer for the weather service. “We’re not real certain about the strength of it just yet but it looks like the damage path is at least two maybe three miles in length and the width about the size of a football field. Weather officials drove the affected area this morning and discovered a narrow defined path of damage as well as signs of converging damage – debris that was thrown back into the damage path rather than away from it. Both of those signs point to a tornado that touched down just east of Griffin and continued west on the ground to just north of Poseyville Fields said. Along the way it destroyed a trailer in Poseyville killing two people ripped the roof off on one home part of a roof off another and destroyed at least one barn and numerous sheds officials said… “We’re not real certain about the strength of it just yet but it looks like the damage path is at least two maybe three miles in length and the width about the size of a football field.
