Randy Kraxberger who had headed toward Hurricane Hill on cross-country skis called his wife Lisa Enarson on his cell phone at about 3:15 p. wanting the phone number for the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. “He said he was in a bit of a bind because the clouds had come in and he was a little disoriented” she said. The structure also known as the EOC will be a 90- to 100-foot tall building with a 185-foot communication tower and have a raised foundation to elevate the structure well above sea level. The EOC building will also house a Collier Sheriff’s Office substation administrative offices for emergency medical services and a 911 dispatch center and backup offices for the information technology department. Because it’s expected to withstand a Category 5 hurricane von Rinteln said that EOC is taking longer to build than the average structure. Along with meeting stricter building requirements the facility will have computers and phone lines that can continue to operate during a storm. The progress made on the new EOC’s has been very good said County Commissioner Donna Fiala. “That thing is going up rapidly” said Fiala whose district includes the new EOC building. “I haven’t heard of any snags… Naples-based Kraft Construction Co. is the firm handling the EOC construction“We have a lot of work yet ahead of us” said von Rinteln. “We anticipate full operation capability prior to the 2009 hurricane season.

The town which was destroyed by a tornado on May 4 is rebuilding as a “green” community that will focus on energy efficiency. More Distinguished Kansans of 2007… When daylight broke Janssen had his first clear look at the rubble — snapped telephone poles houses turned to rubble trees stripped of their branches. He also saw his neighbors digging through the debris in search of their children’s baby photos and other treasured mementos. The F-5 tornado left 10 people dead and destroyed about 95 percent of the community. Along with material losses the nearly 1450 townspeople also had to deal with the emotional upheaval caused by the disaster. “It was a little scary” Janssen said. “The bottom-line is everybody had a variation of post-traumatic stress syndrome. In the first two months after the tornado he said many residents felt the pressure to “build a house right now” while other citizens weighed whether they wanted to sell their property and move closer to their children.
