End of 2007 Hurricane Season Shows NOAA Forecasts Wrong for Second…
Hawaii Reporter – Dec 27, 2007
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is inflating the count of tropical storms and aiding a political campaign to regulate energy use in the process according to The National Center for Public Policy Research. November 30 marks the official end of the 2007 hurricane season and for the second year in a row the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s forecast for the season was wrong. NOAA had predicted there would be seven to nine hurricanes three to five major hurricanes and 13-17 "named storms. " The season ended with just five hurricanes two of which were major (category three or above) and 14 named storms. "NOAA correctly predicted the number of named storms but it’s not clear this statistic has any meaning as the agency is inflating today’s storm numbers relative to storms in the past" said David A. Ridenour vice president of The National Center for Public Policy Research and author of a forthcoming new report on this year’s hurricane season… Ridenour vice president of The National Center for Public Policy Research and author of a forthcoming new report on this year’s hurricane season. "NOAA is doing so both by changing the criteria for naming storms and by failing to account for changes in technology that make detection of storms much easier. "In its annual hurricane season forecast and subsequent tropical cyclone reports for example NOAA makes no mention that it started naming subtropical storms for the first time in 2002. This year one storm – equal to 7 percent of named storms — was a subtropical storm. State-of-the art equipment is also enabling observers to detect cyclones they would have missed in the past. The QuikScat an orbiting satellite that measures the ocean’s surface winds produces more than 200 times the amount of ocean wind information that had been available from ships. "Unfortunately NOAA’s forecasts and cyclone reports suggesting increased activity are being seized upon by activists to support their campaign government take-over of energy" said Ridenour.

Most of its losses came towards the end of the summer when it was forced to turn to the Government for funding support after the credit crunch wiped out its supplies for the money market.

CBS 11 – Dec 27, 2007
The FMCSA began a compliance review of the company the day after the crash. Records indicate it was the fifth such review of the company since 2001. As a result of the previous reviews the FMCSA fined the Tornado Bus Company for violating hours-of-service requirements and falsifying driver duty records. The fines totaled $63090. At the end of their most recent review officials found the bus driver had again driven more hours than are allowed in a single trip and did not have a co-driver. “Despite the imposition of these penalties Tornado’s method of operation remained unchanged. The immediate and severe hazard to safety stems from Tornado’s egregious indifference to the hours-of-service requirements” the FMCSA documents stated… “We put trucks or drivers out of service for various reasons but not necessarily an entire company out of service very often” agency spokeswoman Melissa Mazzella DeLaney said. It is however at least the second Texas-based bus company ordered shut down since 2005. Federal regulators shut down Global Limo after a 2005 bus fire killed 23 nursing home patients fleeing Hurricane Rita. Global Limo’s owner former NFL player James Maples was convicted last year of maintenance and inspection charges — poorly managing his fleet and not requiring drivers to fill out vehicle inspection reports. None of the charges were directly related to the deadly bus fire. (© 2008 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.
