Punctual to the minute of our10 pm meeting the rockers who had just flown in from their gig in Shillongseemed full of pep and suitably attired in hard rock regalia ? leatherjackets boots with spurs bling shades and houndstooth pendants. They started off with nothingbut praises for the subcontinent. ?It?s been amazing. We?veplayed to about 45000 people there and it was such a beautiful atmosphere thepeople have been so hospitable and warm? said Klaus Meine who had in1981 damaged his voice so badly he could not even speak properly.

Knights come together to get win over Hurricane

‘ You can’t be selfish. ” Jeffrey scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter including four free throws on a rare six-point possession for the Knights. Hurricane had taken a 51-49 lead early in the fourth quarter when Jeffrey went up for an offensive rebound and was fouled. A technical foul was then assessed to Hurricane’s Antwane Cunningham for arguing with the official. Jeffrey stepped up and hit four free throws and the Knights grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds before Corey Woomer scored on a layup and was fouled. Woomer missed the free throw but the play sparked a 14-4 run that Hurricane could not recover from. “I’ve seen a lot of basketball and emotions can get like that and it can end up changing a game” Haggerty said… “He doesn’t jump very high but he has great touch and he uses that body pretty well. ” Even without the emotions built up from the week and the season-opener facing Hurricane created an atmosphere that felt like postseason at The Castle. In last year’s sectional there was a skirmish and Hurricane coach Dwayne Sowards was ejected. Sowards was serving the second game of a suspension as a result of his ejection from that contest but that did not keep the teams from a physical game that will have the trainers busy this morning. “In the battles we have with Hurricane it is not uncommon to see some guys limping off the floor” Haggerty said. Jeffrey was one of those with a limp after battling to the final second for the win but he said with emotion comes physical play. “We had a fight last year and technicals so you know we expected it to get rough” Jeffrey said.

But Louisiana largely in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 may be ahead of other states. Transportation and hurricane-protection planners in Baton Rouge are already responding to concerns raised in the report forging ahead with heat-resistant pavements and higher bridges and levees. Elsewhere along the coast transportation planners are only now considering the effects of climate change in the next 100 years which could include as much as a 4-foot rise in sea level a 10 percent increase in the intensity of hurricanes a dramatic increase in the number of days with temperatures of 90 and 100 degrees or higher and more periods of intense rainfall. At risk are thousands of miles of roads hundreds of bridges and dozens of airports that will be flooded more often or could be damaged by periods of high heat or more frequent hurricanes or whose operations could otherwise be affected by climate changes according to the report. The report concludes that the combination of more intense hurricanes and higher sea levels also will expand the area facing potential storm damage a concern because existing roadway capacity is not designed for large-scale evacuations. “This preliminary assessment raises clear cause for concern regarding the vulnerability of transportation infrastructure and services in the central Gulf Coast due to climate and coastal changes” the report concludes… But a storm surge of 18 feet threatens 98 percent of port facilities along the coast and a third of coastal rail lines. The report does not address the effectiveness of existing flood controls however or of the planned 100-year hurricane protection for the New Orleans area by 2011. It also does not identify the effect of hurricane winds on transportation infrastructure. But the potential effects of surge on transportation is real based on damage estimates from Hurricane Katrina. “Repair costs for the more than (40-mile) CSX railroad segment damaged in Hurricane Katrina $250 million could be dwarfed by the costs of moving the line if the company chose to relocate the line further inland” the report concluded based on congressional proposals after the storm to authorize $700 million in federal money to do just that. The effects of surge during Katrina to the Interstate 10 twin spans connecting New Orleans to Slidell and a similar bridge in Bay St.
