Stretching across the Great Plains Tornado Alley has the perfect weather conditions for forming tornadoes. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air. This column extends from the bottom of a thunderstorm to the ground. It has powerful circular winds that can be more than 300 miles.

com Chief Long-Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi in May has proven in side-by-side comparisons to be the most accurate. Throughout the season Bastardi was also often the first to give warning of individual storms. As part of the 2007 hurricane season forecast Bastardi and his team at AccuWeather. com predicted “13 or 14 total storms in the Atlantic Basin including three intense hurricanes of Category 3 or greater. ” In contrast the government weather service forecast called for 13 to 17 named storms and between three and five intense storms. Two other private forecasters’ predictions were too high calling for 15 and 17 named storms respectively and four to five intense storms. In actuality there were 14 storms and two intense storms during the 2007 season both numbers almost exactly what was predicted by Bastardi and his AccuWeather… com team excelled again in this season at giving timely warning. “What really counts with hurricane forecasts is the impact they have on people’s ability to protect their business and family interests and safety” Bastardi said. “In the Gulf we accurately forecast Barry Erin and Humberto well in advance of anyone else. The extra time allowed citizens public safety officials and businesses to prepare for the storm. ” Hurricane Humberto provides an example of the advanced warning provided. Bastardi and his team began warning of the storm that would later become Hurricane Humberto as early as September 7th four days before the National Hurricane Center (NHC) first acknowledged weather conditions conducive for the development of the storm.

The Wisconsin tornado outbreak of 23 June 2004. (01-DEC-07) National Weather Digest. Seventeen tornadoes and numerous reports of damaging straight-line… [FIGURE 1 OMITTED] This outbreak had only some of the “synoptically evident” parameters highlighted in other outbreaks by Doswell et al. (1993) and Johns and Doswell (1992). However the aforementioned authors pointed out that tornado episodes can still occur in these situations and in fact most tornado days are not “synoptically evident. ” As shown later strong wind shear was in place over Wisconsin but the surface low of approximately 1006 mb was relatively weak when compared to the “synoptically evident” tornado days. This was mainly due to the displacement of the 100 kt jet streak and strongest cyclonic vorticity advection to the north of the surface low. In the present study the evolution of the synoptic and mesoscale environments is discussed and close monitoring of the rapidly evolving meteorological features and severe weather indices is emphasized.

They remind all of us ADHD sufferers about Mother Nature’s beach tax. (POINT) Will those hurricane forecasters ever get it right again? The 2007 hurricane season has wound down and for the second year in a row hurricane forecasters have come up short–or should I say long. Once again they all predicted an above-average season got all of us worked up with the memories of failed urban evacuations floating corpses and flattened cities from 2004 and 2005. And once again that didn’t exactly happen now did it? But honestly this is a good thing. Bad forecasts still have the desired effect of accurate ones. They alert the business community and.
