Hurricane Season Comes to a Close
KTRE – Nov 28, 2007
Hurricane Humberto started out as an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Then in a matter of 19 hours it set a record for the most rapid intensification of a tropical system in the Atlantic basin. Despite the fact that the track of Humberto came close to East Texas we felt very little effect from the storm as it weakened rapidly once it made landfall. Other than a few light showers most of the heavy rain and strongest winds were confined to areas around Beaumont Port Authur and the Upper Texas coast… Hurricane Humberto started out as an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf of Mexico. 3 percent of his throws and if that wasn’t enough he has also scored 12 touchdowns on the ground. In last weekend’s division-clinching win over Rice Smith threw for 441 yards and five scores and he also ran for a touchdown. It was the third time Smith has thrown for five touchdowns in a game this season and the 12th straight time he has eclipsed 300 passing yards. Brennan Marion was his favorite target with seven catches for 244 yards and two touchdowns while true freshman Trae Johnson added five receptions for 85 yards and two scores as well. For the season Johnson leads the team with 61 catches and he ranks second to Marion with 940 receiving yards and 10 scores. Marion a big time playmaker has 32 receptions for a team-high 1148 yards and 11 touchdowns and he is averaging an eye-popping 35… It was the fifth straight victory for the Hurricane which finished 6-2 in league play to capture the West Division title. Tulsa actually finished in a first place tie in the division with Houston but its 56-7 triumph over the Cougars during the season gave it the tie-breaker. The Hurricane boasts a solid 9-3 record on the year and it is just one victory shy of posting its highest win total since 1982. As for UCF it finished the regular season with a league-best 7-1 mark en route to the East Division title. The Knights ripped off six straight wins to end the regular season and that includes a 36-20 victory over Texas-El Paso last weekend to clinch the division crown. Much like its opponent UCF stands at 9-3 overall and it is one triumph short of tying the school record for wins in a season set in 1990. The Knights and Hurricane met in the inaugural 2005 C-USA title game with Tulsa posting a 44-27 victory for its first league title since 1985.

Vail student’s return to New Orleans isn’t easy
Vail Daily News – Nov 28, 2007
They are members of Vail Mountain’s Ethically Engaged Youth a “full immersion service program whose mission is to offer high school students a comprehensive appreciation for the cultural economic geographic and political confluence that results in endemic conditions of poverty” according to school officials. Some of the students have submitted essays about their experience in New Orleans for publication. NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA In July of 2005 a month before Hurricane Katrina hit my family and I visited New Orleans. Although our visit was short it was obvious that New Orleans was a place unlike any other: It was a place filled with a rich unique culture and an alluring liveliness a New Orleans very different from the one I returned to in June 2007 with Vail Mountain School. Two years ago I saw the streets filled with energetic locals and then saw the devastation of Katrina broadcasted on the TV. On the news I saw streets flooded houses torn down and people on their rooftops hoping to be saved from the rising water. This summer when we stepped out into the hot humid air I initially found a normal prosperous city not one filled with high waters and ubiquitous debris… The bathroom door had been washed off by the strength of the current and it lay bent jammed inside the small bathroom itself. Its steel frame had been morphed to the flow of the water. The hurricane hit over two years ago and yet this home looked as if it had endured this tragedy yesterday. Contributing factors Twenty-four hours after landing in this place that was both winning and breaking my heart it was explained to us WHY Hurricane Katrina had caused such extreme damage in New Orleans. We learned that the absence of Louisiana’s wetlands contributed to such destruction. The wetlands used to provide protection for the city they were the first “speed bump” for the oncoming storms. However the wetlands began to diminish because of the installment of the levies.
