Tornado embraced as centrefold for calendar
London Free Press – Nov 21, 2007
Last year Phillips says about 35000 copies were sold. “It outsells the Playboy calendar” he says during a promotional stop in London. “But my centrefold is a tornado. The ongoing popularity of his calendar and books (including Blame It On The Weather: Strange Weather Facts) is clearly a symptom of a national obsession. Why are so many Canadians so interested in the weather?Phillips has various theories including that weather can be dramatic demanding and diverse and that it evokes a pioneer-like spirit of survival and hardiness. “I think we’re outwardly disgusted (by the weather) but inwardly proud” says Phillips who grew up in Windsor. Part of the appeal he says is the oneupmanship factor: The chance to brag that our storm was fiercer than theirs.
US hurricane risk higher over next 5 years: RMS
Business Insurance – Nov 21, 2007
Risk Management Solutions’ five-year prediction for landfalling hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin between 2008 and 2012 is “significantly above the risk averaged over the long term” it said in a statement. The prediction was endorsed by seven of the world’s leading hurricane researchers who met last month although there was no consensus on the reason for the higher risk RMS said. The experts were asked to rate the likelihood of a range of statistical models on potential hurricane activity in the Atlantic over the next five years including the possibility that the number of storms could decline… But they could not agree whether the cause was natural cycles or man-made climate change RMS said. The catastrophe modeler’s prediction is likely to mean that the cost of insurance will remain high for property owners and businesses in hurricane-exposed regions of the United States despite having two relatively claim-free years. RMS estimates that the average annual insured losses in 2008 are likely to be 40% higher than the long-term average for the storm-prone Gulf Coast Florida and southeastern United States. For the exposed Mid-Atlantic and northeastern coastal regions it estimates they will be 25% to 30% higher.
ANIMART Veterinarian Lends a Hand to Farm Families Affected by Hurrica…
Wisconsin Ag Connection – Nov 21, 2007
ANIMART Veterinarian Dr. Burton Wiersema recently returned from a two-week trip to Nicaragua where he provided disaster relief to these agriculture-dependent families and their animals. For many the hurricane wiped out their entire food supply cropland and cattle. “My goal was to gather as much animal medicine as possible to treat the animals and train farmers how to use the medication and carry on the treatments when I left” said Wiersema a practicing veterinarian from Brandon who led a team of 30 to help re-establish animal agriculture in the area. With his interpreter and university students from Bluefield Indian Caribbean University Wiersma treated more than 265 cattle horses and pigs for parasites and administered antibiotic treatments and vitamins A B and D to disease-stricken animals. “I was not prepared for the devastation that I encountered when I visited the villages that were literally destroyed by the hurricane” Wiersema said. “We gave as many people as possible the hope that there are people who care for them and that they are not facing this disaster alone.
Remnants of Hurricane Noel leaves New England in the dark
New York Daily News – Nov 21, 2007
The deadliest storm of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season struck a blow to New England Saturday destroying trees and spurring a power outage for 80000 homes. By Sunday remains of Noel were partially to blame for at least two house fires. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported in New England. A spokesperson for NStar said the power company was hoping to restore power to customers by Monday. With News Wire Services.
Catastrophe forecaster says US due for more hurricanes
Global Surf News – Nov 21, 2007
Results of the elicitation suggest that the average risk of landfalling hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin for the next five years known as ‘the medium-term view’ remains at approximately the same level as has been predicted for the past two years which is significantly above the risk averaged over the long term. Therefore medium-term hurricane activity rates in the 2008 version of the RMSĀ® U. Hurricane Model will remain unchanged from the existing 2007 version. The current activity rates lead to estimates of average annual insured losses that will be 40% higher than those predicted by the long-term mean of hurricane activity for the Gulf Coast Florida and the Southeast and 25-30% higher for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coastal regions. Seven experts from North America Europe and Asia participated in the annual elicitation in Miami last month… The current activity rates lead to estimates of average annual insured losses that will be 40% higher than those predicted by the long-term mean of hurricane activity for the Gulf Coast Florida and the Southeast and 25-30% higher for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coastal regions. Seven experts from North America Europe and Asia participated in the annual elicitation in Miami last month. This highly respected and innovative approach to estimating hurricane landfall rates allowed leading researchers to review a range of statistical models representing alternative perspectives on potential hurricane activity in the Atlantic including the possibility for decreasing activity over the next five years. The experts were then asked to weight the various models to provide their best estimate of the landfalling hurricane risk in the U. and Caribbean from 2008 to 2012.

Jose Achache director of the group's secretariat said the “long-overdue” idea of sharing is already having an impact two years after it began to be implemented building on advances in earth observation disaster preparations and early warning systems. But the system of sharing information is still “rickety” and much more has to be done Achache said noting a Bangladesh-born hurricane expert in the United States said he had to make his own calculations based on the available information and warn authorities in his homeland. Hurricane expert Hassan Mashriqui of Louisiana State University said in the United States that his warning by e-mail to Bangladesh authorities helped guide the evacuation that saved lives.
