Brooks also sent out crews and equipment to clean-up debris and help repair homes in the area. Working with the Belize Defense Force and the British Military thirty employees of Brooks Tropicals unloaded and repackaged over 120 metric tons of food which included water rice protein biscuits and beans. This was quickly accomplished due to a standing agreement between Belize’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and Brooks Tropicals to provide company resources during and after a national emergency. Besides the emergency food distribution workforce twenty other employees were dedicated to working debris clean-up in the surrounding area… Besides the emergency food distribution workforce twenty other employees were dedicated to working debris clean-up in the surrounding area. Other workers were teamed up to go out to the firm’s papaya fields setting trees upright and planting new seedlings for future harvests. Overall eight army-sized trucks were put into hurricane relief action. The trucks were evenly divided between emergency supply distribution and clean-up work. In a span of two weeks the clean-up trucks were able to make two passes through the surrounding communities using cane loaders to lift debris into the trucks. Crews also helped their neighbors in putting back roofs repairing windows and other home repairs made necessary from the storm. Brooks Tropicals grows and packs Caribbean Red and Caribbean Sunrise papayas in Belize Central America.

The government yesterday held an emergency preparedness meeting which asked coastal-zone district administration to stay alert and also requested people in the vulnerable areas to take shelter at cyclone shelters. According to the latest Met office bulletin the hurricane was centred 1115 kilometres south-southwest of Chittagong 1030km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar and 1090km south of Mongla seaport. Most of the time the hurricane remained largely static occasionally slightly moving in the north and north-west direction. The Met office said the sea was very rough and advised all fishing boats and other sea vessels to anchor off the shore until further notice. “The hurricane is likely to intensify further and move in the north and northwest direction. Mexico floods: Lives saved but what about livelihoods?
Reuters AlertNet – Nov 14, 2007
Almost a decade ago 11000 people died when Hurricane Mitch hit Central America. Compared with Mitch the death toll of 25 from flooding and landslides in Mexico’s Tabasco and Chiapas state has been “relatively light” according to the magazine. The main difference is that these days people are more likely to be evacuated well in advance. True there have been… administration during Hurricane Katrina. But what to do when residents return to the affected area only to find their staple crops – which takes years to recover – are damaged or wiped out? This is what happened in September when Hurricane Felix struck Nicaragua’s Mosquito coast where most of the country’s Mosquito Indians live. Some 200000 people have been left without homes or fields and it will take about five years for the region’s coconut palm crop to recover. Even in much better managed Mexico it will take years before the disaster-affected region is back on its feet economically says.
