Yachting NZ backs cutting Tornado cats from Olympics

The council’s decision at the weekend has been attacked by sailors overseas who are also unhappy that other classes with greater spectator appeal than existing ones were not introduced. Voting over which men’s events would be sailed in 2012 boiled down to either the multihull or the keelboat (at present the Star class) being cast adrift after next year’s Beijing Olympics. New Zealand won Tornado gold in 1984 and silver in 1988 both through the crew of Rex Sellers and Chris Timms. But New Zealand’s representative voted in favour of retaining the keelboat category ahead of the multihull. YNZ chief executive Des Brennan said New Zealand at present had greater strength in keelboats than in multihulls. “Certainly in some countries there are some very unhappy people” he said of the Isaf decision. “At the end of the day the multihull classes in New Zealand are a lot less strong than many of the other classes and that’s just the way things are at the moment… Brennan said Isaf was faced with a number of considerations when deciding what events would be sailed at Weymouth on the English south coast. They included broadening the appeal of yachting increasing participation numbers and keeping costs down. Sellers’ son Brett himself a Tornado sailor and hoping to make it to next year’s Olympics said he was “pretty disappointed” at the Isaf decision. “The whole Isaf philosophy is to make sailing more exciting and media friendly” he said. “I just don’t think excluding the Tornado which is the fastest and most exciting boat goes along with that. ” On the issue of cost he didn’t believe that once a Tornado had been purchased it was that much more expensive to run than any other Olympic yacht. Sellers was hoping to help New Zealand qualify for the Beijing Olympics in the Tornado class at the world championships in Auckland in February.

Sense of triumph not lost on Tornado netters
Mail Tribune – Nov 13, 2007
The tears shed Saturday in the moments that followed North Medford’s first five-game loss of the season were not tears of loss according to head coach Ron Beick rather on what the girls had gained during their remarkable run. 3-ranked Black Tornado upset top-ranked Jesuit in four games during Friday’s quarterfinals then returned a few hours later to dispose of defending state champion Gresham in five games to set up Saturday’s finale with West Linn. “This was a huge step forward” Beick said Monday in the midst of several congratulatory phone calls. “The girls knew they had accomplished a tremendous number of things. “And best of all they earned it all through their own hard work and dedication to the program. “The kids know full well that every Gresham player plays (volleyball) all year round and every Jesuit kid and every Central Catholic kid and so on” said Beick of the large club teams that fuel the state’s top prep programs… “But what’s nice is (this year’s runner-up finish) shows if you dedicate yourselves to that it can work. “It’s been a developing process for Beick and company certainly not an overnight success story. For the past 20 years the Black Tornado has toiled through a large-school classification dominated by the likes of Gresham Central Catholic West Linn Jesuit and Barlow. When Beick took over the volleyball program for the 1994 season like any coach state championships were the ultimate goal. But if you could snap your fingers and make it happen the sporting world wouldn’t be what it is today providing the wonder and emotion that only live theater provides. The Black Tornado had a fourth-place showing in 1993 to open the door for greater things and under Beick the team finished sixth in 1997 and third in 1998 to continue that evolution. A key to the puzzle came in the years to follow with Beick toying with the notion of significantly changing his defensive system by adopting a blocking philosophy that had showed promise in the Olympics and at the college level in the late 1980s.

McCallie GPS Sweep Temple
The Chattanoogan – Nov 13, 2007
With Andrews adding seven more points in the second quarter Temple outscored McCallie by 17-14 to cut the gap to 29-25 at intermission. Jeremy Sexton and Josh Reaves scored back-to-back buckets as Temple got to within 34-33 with 5:29 to play in the third but the Crusaders never got any closer as McCallie slowly pulled away in the second half at the free throw line. The Blue Tornado canned 18 of 23 free throws for the game including 16 of 21 in the second half and seven of 10 in the final 75 seconds to keep the Crusaders at bay. “That was a good win for us. They have a very good basketball team and they don’t lose in this gym very often” Wadley said afterward. “It was somewhat of an unusual feeling but I got a warm reception from everyone and that was really nice. We have a couple of players who are hurt and didn’t play but we just wanted to be competitive… 4 percent and just five of 24 from three-point range. McCallie won the rebound battle 35-24. Russ Purdy and Johnny Newman both grabbed five for the Blue Tornado while Johnson snared 13 boards for the Crusaders including eight on the defensive end. GPS 53 TEMPLE GIRLS 22 : This game was decided early as the Bruisers raced to an 11-0 lead after the first quarter before coasting to the halftime break up 30-3. The good news for coach Susan Crownover is that she got lots of minutes for every player on her roster including several with very little game experience. “That wasn’t a bad start as it’s always good to get a win” Crownover said. “We still have a lot to learn but these girls have bought into the idea that we’re going to play defense and I’m pleased with that.
