Houston Chronicle – Oct 24, 2007
html FORT LAUDERDALE FLA. — The National Hurricane Center may have a new director within a month and at least two names are on the candidate list: acting deputy director Bill Read and senior hurricane specialist Rick Knabb. Today is the deadline to apply for the job. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials who will ultimately select the director are tight-lipped about who is in the running. However Read on Tuesday confirmed that he has applied and longtime colleagues at the hurricane center said Knabb has as well. “Those are two first-class acts in Rick Knabb and Bill Read” former director Max Mayfield said… However Read on Tuesday confirmed that he has applied and longtime colleagues at the hurricane center said Knabb has as well. “Those are two first-class acts in Rick Knabb and Bill Read” former director Max Mayfield said. “Our nation’s hurricane program would be well served by either of those folks. Read has been a National Weather Service manager for 15 years most recently as head of the Houston-Galveston office. That gives him considerably more management experience than Knabb. Knabb who recently was named team leader over the hurricane center’s 10 main forecasters has more hands-on expertise in tropical forecasting. Based on past history Read may have the edge.

Interestingly Delta finished with a better region and overall record than its first-round opponent but Hurricane gets home-field advantage because of the UHSAA’s decision last winter to classify half of Region 9 Hurricane’s league as 4A schools. Delta advanced to last year’s 3A semifinals but its 2007 prognosis was unclear because it lost so much experience.

Scientists play the weather god
Times of India – Oct 24, 2007
So-calledhurricane modifiers aim to steer dangerous weather patterns off course and toweaken hurricanes in the hope of preventing disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Scientists have devised a plan to reduce hurricane wind speeds by having a planedrop soot into near-freezing clouds at the top of a hurricane causing it towarm. “If they’re done in theright place at the right time they can affect the strength of the hurricane”Moshe Alamaro of MIT said. “We’re starting with computer simulations and thenwill hopefully experiment on a small weathersystem. California Wildfires: FEMA Responds
Washington Post – Oct 24, 2007
____________________Maryland: Good afternoon Pat. Do you think that FEMA’s response will be more effective than their response to Katrina? Already there are signs that the media is referring to the California victims as "evacuees" instead of immigrants as with Katrina! Definitely the perceptions have changed!Pat Philbin: FEMA has dramatically improved its coordination and communication capabilities with state local and federal partners. This has been evident in our response to Hurricane Dean tornados in the Midwest and in CA. Short answer is yes. _______________________washingtonpost. com: The first question was inadvertently posted early. Please join us live at 1 p.
