The effective evacuation demonstrated the high level of development achieved by local disaster prevention and civil protection plans in Mexico. Indeed United Nations representatives congratulated Mexico on both the evacuation and its distribution of emergency services. Hurricane Dean one of the four strongest hurricanes to make landfall ever recorded hit the Yucatan Peninsula and crossed the Gulf of Mexico. It didn’t lose steam until Thursday when it petered out in central Mexico.

Thousand of British tourists are now trying to escape Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before the hurricane with winds of 160mph hits land tonight. Long queues have been reported at local airports and reports estimated there could be more than 5000 British tourists still in the area. In total 90000 tourists are being evacuated from the “Mayan Riviera”. Robbie Black of Llanelli told the BBC he and his family were among 300 passengers stranded after their flight to Cardiff out of Cancun on Wednesday was cancelled.

In my case and in the case of many who live in my neighbourhood the hurricane damage was minimal. A few broken branches from the fruit trees and all fruits in bearing scattered on the ground represent the main damage toll. But that was far better than was the case with Hurricane Gilbert of 1988 when we trekked to the hills to draw bucketfuls of water from a skimpy waterfall while competing with sundry people seeking a bath from the same source.
