The hurricane is gaining strength as it sweeps through the Gulf of Mexico’s warm waters. It is now a Category 2 storm expected to make landfall north of Veracruz within hours. fficials in Veracruz state are going beach to beach urging people to evacuate or batten down the hatches. As the winds die down on the Yucatan Peninsula residents are venturing out to clean up and assess the damage there. The hurricane which killed at least 20 people across the region and did extensive damage to bananas and other crops failed to surpass wind speeds and other thresholds to prompt payments from the disaster pool established in February according to fund supervisor Simon Young. Jamaicans awoke on Tuesday to learn that the Electoral Commission of Jamaica had held an emergency meeting and recommended a postponement of the Aug. 27 general elections as a result of the devastation caused by the Category 4 hurricane. Governor General Kenneth Hall is expected to announce the new date later on Tuesday after meeting with his “Privy Council” but newspaper reports have already indicated that the polls will be held on Sept.
