We’re going to tell you how to take action to keep your family safe. HLMES: We are first going to start with that menace that is growing into a monster. Forecasters say hurricane Dean could strengthen into a category 5 storm today. That of course the most dangerous on the scale with winds topping 155 miles per hour. Dean has been roaring across the eastern Caribbean flooding streets and ripping the roofs off buildings. It is expected to slam into Jamaica tomorrow possibly a direct hit there. Police armed forces and emergency service are on high alert… Also parts of Cuba now under a tropical storm warning. KEILAR: That’s right. Meteorologist Bonnie Schneider is live in the Hurricane Headquarters with more on where hurricane Dean is right now. BNNIE SCHNEIDER CNN METERLGSIST: Well taking a look at our satellite perspective you can see as we put this map into motion a well defined eye of very powerful and intense storms. As we look at hurricane Dean you can see outposts particularly here on the western side of the storm. This storm will only strengthen.

NASA to Land Endeavour a Day Early to Avoid Hurricane Dean
FXNews – Aug 18, 2007
NASA worried the hurricane might veer toward Houston the home of Mission Control forcing an emergency relocation of flight controllers to Cape Canaveral. The makeshift control center there would not be nearly as good or big as the Houston operation and that’s why managers wanted to bring Endeavour back to Earth early. Hurricane Dean a fierce Category 4 storm was headed toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico. It was uncertain whether the storm might strike the Texas coastline late in the week; that uncertainty made NASA’s decision — so many days in advance — all the harder. Memories of Katrina fresh Bush gets out front on Hurricane Dean
International Herald Tribune – Aug 18, 2007
Bush who was criticized for a slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina took a pre-emptive strike Saturday against Hurricane Dean as it swept into the Caribbean and threatened the Texas coast. Bush who received two hurricane briefings at his ranch signed a pre-landfall disaster declaration allowing the federal government to move in people equipment and supplies immediately in case Hurricane Dean hits the state. White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said that after Katrina the federal government began reaching out to states facing a disaster and suggesting they request the declaration sooner rather than later. Rick Perry asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the declaration late Saturday morning and Bush approved it hours later. “We are working closely with the state of Texas to address the special-needs populations along the south Texas border which is the current projected path of the storm” Johndroe said.
