23–MIAMI — Amid the storm that has swept through the National Hurricane Center this month over the future of its deposed director there has been one thing missing: an honest-to-goodness hurricane. But Floridians shouldn’t expect that to last. With only two minor tropical storms so far the 2007 hurricane season has been quiet since it officially began June 1. But the slow start is typical even for the above-average season that is still expected. “Just because things are quiet on July 20 doesn’t mean the active season won’t come.
Hurricane Hysteria

The article will appear soon in the peer-reviewed journal Natural Hazards Review. Is the planet warmer than it was? Yes. Is there any trend in hurricane-related damages in the United States where good records of damages exist? After accounting simultaneously for inflation population and property values no. The problem with these storms is that Americans have a peculiar proclivity to take money and bury it in a sand dune on a hurricane-prone beach i. As a result the number of beach homes is going up and up and because the supply is limited (there’s only so much beach) prices have risen astronomically… That year’s Katrina a monster by any standard caused $81 billion worth of damage. Applied Insurance Research using a totally different method estimated $82 billion. But Katrina pales in comparison to the Great Miami hurricane of 1926. Pielke gives two estimates averaging around $148 billion. AIR pegs it at $160 billion. Given the trajectory of property values and population in Florida Pielke notes that a $500 billion hurricane (in today’s dollars) should be quite likely by the 2020s.

scott@heraldtribune. com The first hurricane test lab is scheduled to open at the International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University in Miami next su… The lab will allow scientists for the first time to study in a controlled environment how a house comes apart in a storm offering a window into why building materials and construction methods fail. Up to this point they relied on a mix of mathematical equations and educated guesses. Smaller hurricane-force fans forerunners of the hurricane lab are used to test windows or roof tiles. Mostly they tested miniature models of houses in wind tunnels. “Building codes are all based on best guesses” said Stephen Leatherman the university’s lead hurricane researcher and director of the “Wall of Wind” project. “We think we have the best data but there are a lot of assumptions. You can’t scale a shingle to the size of an ant and expect it to perform like it does in real life.
