Pre-hurricane bargain finds for commodities
MarketWatch – Jun 29, 2007
EDT June 29 2007 SAN FRANCISC (MarketWatch) — Want to buy natural gas orange juice and cotton on the cheap? Now may be the time. With the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season still more than a month away it’s no wonder why all three of these commodities trade well below their year-ago levels. But that could soon change. Natural gas oranges and cotton are among the commodities with the highest risk to production in the event of an active hurricane season in the Atlantic. Case and point: Natural-gas prices climbed to all-time highs and frozen orange-juice futures rallied to a seven-year high in the wake of 2005′s record Atlantic hurricane season. “It is well understood that hurricanes can have a dramatic impact on both the supply and demand of commodities such as orange juice and natural gas” said Ben Smith president of First Enercast Financial… Recently cotton’s been rallying on other weather-related factors while July orange-juice futures tapped a contract low and August natural gas touched its weakest level in more than two years. “With the lack of storms so far low prices in [natural gas and orange juice] likely reflect the current fundamentals: adequate supply with moderate demand” said Smith. ‘People who placed bets last year on high hurricane activity forecasts got burned when nothing major hit the U. This probably makes some of the traders a little gun-shy this season. ‘ ? Ben Smith First Enercast Financial Traders had high expectations for prices last year around this time. August natural-gas contract trades more than 20% below the year-ago level July frozen orange-juice futures are down 25% and cotton is down around 3%.

“The new Hurricane Weather and Research Forecasting model will incorporate satellite data as well as temperature data collected from instruments dropped from aircraft into the water at the eye of the storm to create the first hurricane model that consolidates information from the air sea and land” said Ginis. “This new model has improved physics and numerics allowing us to do a much better job of simulating the hurricane core at much higher resolution which results in better forecasts. ”While the accuracy of forecasting the path of a hurricane has improved dramatically over the years little improvement has been made in accurately predicting hurricane intensity according to Ginis. The new model is expected to greatly improve hurricane intensity predictions while also becoming the first model to predict the storm surge and inland flooding associated with hurricanes… “The new Hurricane Weather and Research Forecasting model will incorporate satellite data as well as temperature data collected from instruments dropped from aircraft into the water at the eye of the storm to create the first hurricane model that consolidates information from the air sea and land” said Ginis. The new model is expected to greatly improve hurricane intensity predictions while also becoming the first model to predict the storm surge and inland flooding associated with hurricanes. Ginis began work on the new model in 2006 and was recently awarded two grants from the National ceanic and Atmospheric Administration to complete work on it and make it operational for the 2008 hurricane season.

Tornado warning issued? prematurely
WBBH – Jun 29, 2007
there was no official answer to the big question of the day. “Still nothing confirmed and nothing going on in terms of the confirmation of a funnel cloud or waterspout” said Lambert. But less than an hour later the NWS issued a tornado warning for Lee County – one that would last for only 18-minutes. But by that time the cloud had passed. We phoned Kelly to get his side of the story. He said simply “It was an error. You can put this one on me… While it may have been an error the National Weather Service argued that it was also an obligation. “We’re sorry to cause confusion. But in a tornado timing is of the essence and minutes are a matter of life or death. We’re in the business of trying to save lives” said Ernie Jillson of the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service says they consider the EC a credible source – if not their most credible. So Kelly’s report coupled with seeing the large storm on the radar prompted the warning. © 2008 bymail(“support” “nbc-2.
