Maximum sustained wind near the center must be 74 mph or greater for it to be classified as a hurricane. These winds spin counterclockwise around a relatively calm center of extremely low pressure known as the eye. Tropical storm – A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained wind is between 39 and 73 mph. At this point the system is given a name… Saharan air layer – The Saharan air layer is a large area of dust that emerges off the African continent into the Atlantic cean during the spring and summer. The SAL usually extends from 5 000 to 25 000 feet into the atmosphere and is associated with large amounts of dust dry air and strong wind aloft. The SAL negatively affects hurricane intensity because the SAL's dry air gets wrapped into a storm and the high wind acts to shear the storm apart. There is still uncertainty with respect to whether the dust actually affects the intensity. Storm surge is secondarily affected by the low pressure of the storm. Tidal surge – This is different from storm surge.
