Researchers Want New Hurricane Strength Ratings

Case in point A prime example of this problem the researchers say is Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was a Category 5 just 24 hours before landfall but downshifted to a 3 by the time it touched Gulf shores. In comparison Hurricane Camille which devastated the same area in 1969 killing 259 people and causing nearly $1. 5 billion dollars in damage had much stronger winds than did Katrina. But Katrina’s wind field extended over a much wider area that Camille’s and caused much more significant coastal flooding making it the costliest and deadliest hurricane in United States history taking nearly 2000 lives and causing $81 billion in damage… Case in point A prime example of this problem the researchers say is Hurricane Katrina. Many Mississippi residents may have relied on their memory of Camille in their decision not to evacuate the researchers argue and call for a new Hurricane Destructive Potential classification that could better alert coastal residents to a storm’s potential for damage. “By incorporating both size and intensity I see this system as a better way to allow people to assess the true potential impact of an approaching storm” said Mark Powell a meteorologist with the Atlantic ceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami.

The tornado could be seen stretching up to 1500m into the clouds near the You Yangs Regional Park about 3pm. Weather bureau senior forecaster Phil King said the tornado lasted for about eight minutes and was the result of an ordinary thunderstorm near the You Yangs. "These things happen more often than you’d think but because they’re only short-lived we don’t often hear about them" Mr King said. May 15 (SPX) — In the eye of a furious hurricane the weather is often quite calm and sunny. But new NASA research is providing clues about how the seemingly subtle movement of air within and around this region provides energy to keep this central “powerhouse” functioning. Using computer simulations and observations of 1998′s Hurricane Bonnie in southern North Carolina scientists were able to get a detailed view of pockets of swirling warm humid air moving from the eye of the storm to the ring of strong thunderstorms in the eyewall that contributed to the intensification of the hurricane. The findings suggest that the flow of air parcels between the eye and eye wall – largely believed trivial in the past – is a key element in hurricane intensity and that there’s more to consider than just the classic “in-up-and-out” flow pattern. The classic pattern says as.

But he says only 10 of those devices haveshown promise including the fuel savings claims of Tornado Air ManagementSystems. Swiencki who has worked at EPA- and CARB-recognized emission testingfacilities has tested Tornado using a dynamometer in the lab using 4 6and 8 cylinder vehicles following EPA test protocols. “verall lab testingon Tornado showed a seven to 13 percent change in fuel economy” saidSwiencki from lab testing he has conducted on Tornado. “The results speakfor themselves. Using a disciplined approach in the lab Swiencki says dynamometer testingis the most accurate testing method available. He has been involved inemission testing since 1978 and has worked for General Motors lsonEngineering LA Emission Laboratory EClogic and California EnvironmentalEngineering. He says some people have claimed that “we were paid off to dothis… ” It is an assertion that he says is ridiculous “because we have toomuch at stake. With the many government and state contracts we work on wewouldn’t jeopardize our reputation to phony up a test. Tornado is a non-moving turbine-shaped device which creates a vortex orswirling effect to the engine. The result is improved airflow into theengine’s combustion chamber causing a more efficient mixture between airand fuel. The product takes only a few minutes to install and lasts thelifetime of a vehicle. Tornado comes with a limited lifetime warranty andcan pay for itself in about 6 months. It retails for an M.
