‘Katrina’ Sinks Lower on List of Popular Baby Names Since…
FXNews – May 11, 2007
The national trend surprised Cleveland Evans a psychology professor and names expert at Bellevue University in Nebraska. Usually he said publicity around a name — positive or negative — will cause it to spike. After Hurricane Camille devastated the Gulf Coast in 1969 for example the name Camille quickly became more popular he said. “So many parents are looking for a new unusual name there are always a few of them who are going to take it from any cultural event” said Evans the past president of the American Name Society. “There must be some sort of (negative) threshold and Katrina must have crossed it. Still he said Katrina isn’t likely to go extinct. “This is not going to be a name like Adolf that’s going to disappear and be unusable ever again” he said referring to that name’s association with Adolf Hitler… Scarlett Billis said they were reluctant to use the name less than a year after the hurricane but her husband had always liked it as a variation of Katherine a family name. Also their family is Greek and the name is close to the popular Greek name Katerina. “People ask if we named her after the hurricane” Billis said. “We didn’t pick it because of that and we were actually hesitant. but we do joke that our house looks like a hurricane hit.
Hurricane season gets an early start

Because this formation usually happens at a latitude of about 30 degrees north such storms are called “subtropical. ” But they also have appeared in the southern Atlantic. In 2004 hurricane Catarina evolved via this mechanism off the coast of Brazil. It was short-lived lasting only four days. But it made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane killing as many as 10 people and inflicting $360 million in damage. Scientists have known of these storms for decades but they’ve had a tough time figuring out where they fit in the storm-system spectrum. “There’s no unique definition of what they are” acknowledges Christopher Davis a researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colo… In 2004 hurricane Catarina evolved via this mechanism off the coast of Brazil. For a long time the subtropical cyclone tag was tied to “anything that looks weird” he says. As a result some systems didn’t get the attention they deserved adds Jenni Evans professor of meteorology at Penn State University in State College.
First of 9 Kan. Tornado Victims Buried
Washington Post – May 11, 2007
Isn’t that what a community is all about?” he said. “It is not about buildings. “The tornado destroyed more than 90 percent of the tiny south-central Kansas city and community leaders are trying to instill hope in a grieving population that is still sifting through the remnants of their homes. Across the city the buzz of chain saws filled the air. A plume of black smoke from burning debris piles at a landfill drifted for miles. Homeowners loaded pickup trucks and vans with salvaged furniture and other remaining possessions. Frank Banta’s home was spared but several others he owned and his shop were demolished.
Radar warning system prevented more deaths in Kansas tornado.

(11-MAY-07) Wichita Eagle (Wichita KS). _ A massive tornado was on the ground and heading toward Greensburg long after sunset. Radars available to the National Weather Service only a few years ago wou… But recent technological advancements allowed the Dodge City Kan. weather service forecaster on duty to see that not only had a tornado developed it was quite possibly as large as the tornado that hit the klahoma City metropolitan area in 1999 which is perhaps the strongest ever recorded. A tornado warning was already in effect for Kiowa County but he took it a step further. He issued the first “tornado emergency” in the history of the Dodge City office and only the second ever issued in.
Tiny Petri-Dish Twisters Could Reveal Tornado Secrets
FXNews – May 11, 2007
Although scientists understand the basic conditions under which actual tornadoes form many kinds of twisters exist and the specifics about how they spawn remain mysterious. By tinkering with igloos and mimicking real tornadoes future research could tease apart how factors such as terrain condition affect tornado growth. “Knowledge of the relative importance of these factors and of their precise interplay implies the potential to better predict tornadoes” said researcher Andrei Sommer a senior scientist at the University of Ulm in Germany. Sommer noted that tornadoes and hurricanes seem to be intensifying worldwide in either number or violence. Shedding light on how they are generated “might help to identify one common element that is responsible for a possible intensification of both events” Sommer told LiveScience. “It is tempting to say the apparent intensification is from global warming” he added.
