No warning issued before killer tornado

A fast-moving level-2 tornado landed in Holly in Prowers County at about 8 p. Wednesday – ripping through the eastern Colorado town killing a woman injuring 11 others and destroying several older homes and modular homes. Five hours earlier the National Weather Service had issued the tornado watch for 31 counties in western Kansas and three counties in southwestern Nebraska… A fast-moving level-2 tornado landed in Holly in Prowers County at about 8 p. Five hours earlier the National Weather Service had issued the tornado watch for 31 counties in western Kansas and three counties in southwestern Nebraska. No watch was issued for any Colorado county.

There was no warning from the town’s tornado siren before the 600-foot-wide tornado tore a path of destruction just after 8 p. Wednesday through this plains town a few miles from the Kansas border About a quarter of the town’s buildings were destroyed and virtually every structure sustained some damage. Rosemary Rosales 29 a mother of two was tossed from her home into a tree where she was found unconscious… “He said there was no warning and if there was he didn’t hear it” said scar Puga of Greeley Gustavo Puga’s brother. When the tornado approached Rosales was cooking in the kitchen and Noelia was sleeping family members said. Puga had just enough time to get them together. Puga and Rosales had been a couple since high school. They had a common-law marriage and Puga planned to propose to her soon family members said. While she lay dying Puga pleaded with her to wake up because he planned to marry her family members said.

Hurricane-force winds are usually associated with tropical cyclones. A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said it was a "rare and unusual" event but the phenomenon was not a cyclone or hurricane in the Southern cean. "The low is well to the south of us and the winds won’t impact the SA coastline but it will produce heavy swell along the open ocean coasts" he said. "We are predicting the swell to get to 5-7m. " The swell was expected to peak late last night and while some big waves could hit the coasts this morning they will reduce during the day.

Right now in what is called tornado alley several twisters across the Plains that have killed at least two people. The storm system is still moving across the country spanning from the Dakotas to Texas. Now overnight a 600-foot wide tornado reportedly roared right through Holly Colorado that’s due east of Pueblo right near the Kansas state line. And 60 homes damaged 11 people are in the hospital right now. “Homes were there and now they’re gone” county administrator Linda Fairbairn said. “Many if not all the structures in town suffered some degree of damage. “Some mobile homes were “tossed around” by the tornado but authorities did not know whether any of the victims had been in them said Chris Sorensen a spokesman for the emergency response team. Lowe said he had about 800 cattle in his feedlot in Holly when the tornado hit. In addition to the 35 dead others were so badly injured that they would have to be shot he said. “It’s better than letting them suffer” Lowe said. Just three months ago back-to-back blizzards and subzero temperatures killed about 250 of his cattle Lowe said.
