In 2006 surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean both breeding grounds for storms were 1 C cooler than in 2005. El Niño a bigger factor critic arguesther NASA scientists challenged the dust storm theory conceding that dust activity may have contributed to a milder storm season but arguing that it was unlikely to have been the major factor. Scott Braun also a hurricane specialist at the Goddard centre instead credited El Niño ? an unusual warming of ocean temperatures that can trigger profound weather changes worldwide. Braun said that during much of the 2006 storm system there was a high-pressure system across much of the Atlantic combined with enhanced winds ? a condition that can prevent storms from developing. “This large-scale pattern has been associated with the effects of El Niño suggesting it may have played a role in the seasonal activity” Braun said in the ews release. “In fact the last time the Atlantic produced so few storms was in 1997 when an El Niño pattern was also in place. Lau conceded that definitive answers are rare in meteorology.

Sheriff’s department dispatchers are on duty 24 hours a day. If the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning or a sheriff’s deputy spots a tornado the dispatcher hits a button to sound the sirens and a computer controls them. Andy Beadry has Lucas County’s database at his fingertips. Every morning he polls each siren to make sure it has power and is communicating with the system. (AP) — A massive spring storm spawned dozens of tornadoes from the Rockies to the Plains killing at least four people in three states including a woman who was flung into a tree by a twister as wide as two football fields. Sixty-five tornadoes were reported late Wednesday in klahoma Texas Kansas Colorado and Nebraska the National Weather Service said. The storms continued Thursday afternoon with a tornado critically injuring two people in central klahoma… In klahoma a twister Wednesday killed a couple as it blew their home to pieces. In Texas a man was found dead in the tangled debris of his trailer. At least seven people were hurt when a tornado skipped for a mile and a half through Holly and surrounding areas. Five buildings were destroyed and more than 50 were damaged said Chris Sorenson a spokesman for the emergency response team. Victoria Rosales said her sister and the woman’s husband Gustavo Puga were in the kitchen and their 3-year-old daughter Noelia was sleeping in a front room when the tornado hit. Puga was holding onto the little girl when rescuers found them said his brother scar Puga. The two were in fair condition Thursday at a Colorado Springs hospital.
