Suddenly it was pitch-dark and a concrete wall collapsed. “People were screaming and glass was flying everywhere” Robert Baker 15 told The Birmingham News. The March 1 tornado took the lives of eight students. That same day more than 30 tornadoes killed at least 20 people across the Midwest and Southeast… A month earlier three other tornadoes struck central Florida killing 20 people. A MNTH AFTER A TRNAD TRE UP the Desha County town of Dumas many businesses have reopened their doors dislocated workers are back on the job and the manufacturers that sustained the most damage are rebuilding. The businessmen and citizens responsible for this not-so-minor miracle express pride that they did it mostly on their own with they’re quick to point out tremendous support from local and state government. Resentment remains however at the non-response of the federal government to a natural disaster that was estimated to cause millions of dollars in property damage. Although no lives were lost to the Feb. 24 tornado–and Dumas residents are also quick to express thanks for being spared that horror–the resulting loss of jobs cuts to the quick in a small town in a chronically impoverished part of the country… Resentment remains however at the non-response of the federal government to a natural disaster that was estimated to cause millions of dollars in property damage. Wohlschlaeger is president and CE of Arkat Nutrition one of the largest employers in the town of about 5000.

A storm system moving through the area created low dark clouds with ragged bottoms. Sammy Rschirhardt Jr. a businessman said the sirens are part of an early warning system for Castroville. “It’s an early warning system for the whole town” Rschirhardt said.
