Lying flat in a ditch or low area may also offer protection but beware of possible flash flooding and flying debris. Residents should be equally prepared when other forms of severe weather threaten such as lightning floods or hail. Last year the National Weather Center issued 168 flash flood warnings and recorded more than 1200 incidents of severe thunderstorms with winds of 60 miles per hour some with large hail. Preparation for any type of severe weather also means having a family disaster plan and an emergency supply kit assembled and in a location where it is available in an emergency. Would it happen again in the same place? I don’t know but the excitement in the KCPL man’s voice when he asked “Is this your first tornado” still haunts me. Apparently this man whose life revolves around fixing things up after disasters thought it was possible. Before the tornado hit we were bulletproof. Tornados didn’t happen to us; they happened to other people. Not four hours before this one hit my husband sister mother children and a cousin all stood in front of a window on the sixth floor of University Hospital in Columbia watching the funnel clouds go by and joking about impending disaster. We didn’t go to the inside halls like they were telling us to do on the loudspeaker. No tornadoes wouldn’t happen to us.

Revolutionary radar on the aircraft was also used to gather better details on the intensity of rainfall and where exactly it was falling. ne special sensor aboard the DC-8 called the High-Altitude MMIC Sounding Radiometer provided a 3-D distribution of temperature and water vapor in the atmosphere. The sensor is ideal for hurricane studies since it can look through thick clouds and probe into the interior of the storms. It has also led to the development of a new microwave sounder for geostationary satellites GeoSTAR which will make it possible to monitor the interior of hurricanes continuously without having to wait for a satellite to pass overhead. Throughout the field mission a Web-based real time mission monitor developed by Marshall Space Flight Center allowed scientists to track the progress of the experiment from anywhere on the globe using a standard internet connection. "Through the use of sophisticated technology NAMMA provided an excellent opportunity to advance our understanding of tropical cyclones as we gathered data on the critical elements at both the very small and large scales from microscopic dust to air currents spanning hundreds of miles" said Jeff Halverson one of four NAMMA mission scientists. "Much of the data gathered is still being analyzed but the preliminary findings are very promising.

Bush’s promise to protect New rleans by the start of the 2006 hurricane season installed defective flood-control pumps last year despite warnings from its own expert that the equipment would fail during a storm according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. The 2006 hurricane season turned out to be mild and the new pumps were never pressed into action. But the Corps and the politically connected manufacturer of the equipment are still struggling to get the 34 heavy-duty pumps working properly in a city still recovering from 2005′s Hurricane Katrina. The pumps are now being pulled out and overhauled because of excessive vibration Corps officials said. ther problems have included overheated engines broken hoses and blown gaskets according to the documents obtained by AP.
