According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences commercially canned food items can be stored for three years if kept in a cool place. That means Spam and items like canned corn and green beans bought in 2006 should be good through the 2009 hurricane season. But instead of letting them sit there for six months or more Charlotte County Emergency Services director Wayne Sallade suggests putting the canned food to better use. “We recommend giving them to a holiday food bank” Sallade said Tuesday.
