Mike Easley toured the devastated area as disaster assessment teams surveyed what was left of a mobile home park and several brick homes that were flattened by the storm. More than half of the 20 people injured when the tornado struck Riegelwood remained hospitalized Friday including four children Easley said were in “very very critical condition. “The governor declared a state disaster in Columbus County allowing those affected by the storm to apply for state aid. He said it didn’t appear the damage in North Carolina would reach the $8. 9 million threshold for federal aid but he assured locals he would find state funds to help them if it didn’t. The deadly storms left a three-day path of destruction from Louisiana to Maine killing 12 people knocking out power and flooding streets… A precautionary dive into a nearby pond on Friday turned up no bodies. Survivors meanwhile began retrieving whatever valuables they could salvage from devastated homes. Darryl McNair had been sleeping when the tornado picked up his mobile home and tossed it across the street into his neighbor’s yard. “You could feel the house moving” McNair 34 said during a break from picking through rubble Friday. “My whole life was in that house” he said crying. “Everything that was me was in that house. How could you lose everything in so short a time? I struggled to get that stuff and now it’s all out in the road like it was nothing.

This year's storms which included five hurricanes were thefewest in the Atlantic basin since seven formed in 1997. A record28 storms formed last year 15 of which became hurricanes. Theyincluded Hurricane Katrina which devastated New rleans andcaused more than 1800 deaths. Colorado State University meteorologists Philip Klotzbachand William Gray in December April and May predicted a season of17 named storms and nine hurricanes which would have been more-active than normal. In August they cut the forecast because ofclimate disruptions caused by a late El Nino weather pattern inthe Pacific and dryness in the tropical Atlantic. “A variety of factors interact with each other to causeyear-to-year and month-to-month hurricane variability''Klotzbach said in a statement. “It is impossible to understandhow all these processes interact with each other to 100 percentcertainty… this year the firsttime that has happened since 2001 and only the 11th time since1945 Gray said in the statement. Three tropical storms madelandfall this year. The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on Nov. The last named storm to form in the Atlantic basin was HurricaneIsaac which became a tropical storm on Sept. 28 and a hurricaneon Sept.

Friday November 17 2006By David Zucchino Los Angeles TimesRIEGELWD N. — A tornado ripped through this Cape Fear River crossroads at dawn yesterday killing at least seven residents and crushing more than 30 trailers and brick homes just as residents were waking for jobs and school. More than 20 people were hospitalized four of them children officials said. A dark funnel cloud roared past resident Cissy Kennedy’s white double-wide trailer as she brushed her teeth at daybreak. She watched it flatten two double-wides and a single-wide next door killing five of her neighbors but leaving her trailer untouched. “I can’t believe I’m still alive” Ms… “I’m blessed — I had a wall fall on me and all I got was a couple of bruises” Mr. Brown said poking through the soggy remains of his home to retrieve an armload of clothes. The tornado struck at 6:44 a. just 15 minutes after the National Weather Service posted a tornado warning for Riegelwood a rural community dominated by a massive paper plant. The storm flipped cars and pickups into ditches and left the trailer park and surrounding forest littered with insulation window frames kitchen chairs and children’s toys. At least one of the dead was a child according to state officials.
