NC State researchers’ mild hurricane season prediction holds true
USA Today – Nov 1, 2006
So far nine named storms have formed in the Atlantic Basin and five have been hurricanes. Using a unique method to analyze water temperatures in the Atlantic cean the N… State team predicted five or six hurricanes would form in the Atlantic Basin and one or two would make landfall along the East Coast. Meteorology professor and doctoral student Tingzhuang Yan presented the prediction in April during a national hurricane conference in California. The National Hurricane Center predicted 13 to 16 named storms would form during the Atlantic hurricane season. Top researchers at Colorado State University forecast 17. The predictions didn’t seem overzealous after a record-setting 2005 season which produced 28 named storms including the devastating Hurricane Katrina. “It’s not that we were smarter than everybody else” Lian said. “If we were truly smart we would have said ‘It will be an inactive year.
Hurricane Run stays low-profile – Horse Racing

Media attention at least on-site has been virtually nonexistent for Hurricane Run since neither trainer Andre Fabre nor owner Michael Tabor is here. Fabre in fact has told the International Racing Bureau he will not come at all. Hurricane Run who has been listed as a lukewarm favorite over English Channel and Cacique on morning lines by both Mike Battaglia of Churchill and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form drew post 7 in the Turf which will be run around three turns on the seven-furlong Churchill turf course. Hurricane Run will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon. The other two Europeans in the Turf are Red Rocks a 3-year-old who also was on the track for a second time Wednesday after arriving Sunday and Scorpion a dual Group 1 winner who was scheduled to make his first appearance Thursday after arriving here Tuesday as part of the five-horse Aidan ‘Brien contingent. Red Rocks with Frankie Dettori to ride drew post 9 and Scorpion with Mick Kinane has post 4. The nine hole for Red Rocks was just fine with trainer Brian Meehan… Fabre in fact has told the International Racing Bureau he will not come at all. Situated just north of the Venezuelan coast around 12[degrees] to 13[degrees] N the Netherlands Antilles are normally well outside the hurricane belt. Nevertheless some of these powerful storms sent waves and swell of significant size to these islands strong enough for impacts on the coastal geomorphology. Waves along the rocky eastern coastline reached heights of > 12 m. ur observations during the days of Hurricane Ivan on Bonaire Island include impacts on exposed and sheltered shorelines transformation of beaches and cliffs sediment movement on higher terraces as well as boulder transport. The latter is important to distinguish storm wave-induced boulder movement from boulder movement by tsunami which have affected Bonaire several times during the Younger Holocene. ADDITINAL INDEX WRDS: Boulder transport storm ridges. INTRDUCTIN Bonaire’s coastlines are–because of their mostly rocky nature–not easily affected by wave impacts. The trade wind-exposed easterly coast receives waves of 2-3.

Journal of Coastal Research 22(6) 1382-1402. West Palm Beach (Florida) ISSN 0749-0208. Ivan a strong Category 4 hurricane (downgraded to a Category 3 at landfall) caused widespread erosion and overwash along the northwestern Florida barrier-island beaches. This study examines the storm impact and short-term poststorm recovery along a 200-km stretch of coast from Fort Walton Beach eastward to St. ne prestorm and three poststorm beach-profile surveys were conducted to quantify the storm-induced morphological changes and poststorm recovery. Forty-six trenches were excavated to study the characteristics and thickness of subaerial storm deposits… Local factors such as beach width and orientation and sediment properties and supply caused variations in the thickness of storm deposit. ADDITINAL INDEX WRDS: Hurricanes beach erosion coastal morphology near-shore sediment transport storm deposits storm surge wave setup. INTRDUCTIN Hurricane Ivan made landfall along the northwestern Florida and Alabama coast on September 16 2004. Ivan briefly reached Category 5 strength and persisted as a strong Category 4 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico before being downgraded to a strong Category 3 at landfall by the US National Hurricane Center. Ivan was one of four strong hurricanes that directly impacted Florida coasts within a 1-month period. Apparent and dramatic morphological and sedimentological impacts extend over 300 km eastward from the center of the hurricane. The Florida panhandle and the general northern Gulf coast are of relatively low wave and tide energy.
