“Trapped wave” amplifies hurricane storm surge
æ°åç’ – Oct 31, 2006
The 10-foot surges that battered the Florida coastline were 3 to 4 feet higher than predicted. Florida State University and the National ceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NAA) researchers have found that the answer to the mystery lay in a number of factors including the hurricane’s speed and path. When viewed from above in the Northern Hemisphere hurricane winds rotate counterclockwise. Earth’s rotation pushes ocean water clockwise toward the storm creating a slight build-up on that side. If the hurricane travels parallel to a coastline on its right side its winds will force the ocean water against the coast “creating a bulge of high sea level” explained Steven Morey a Florida State University oceanographer. This bulge will travel along the coast forming what is known as a constantly trapped wave. The storm ran alongside the western coast of Florida during Dennis allowing the trapped wave to form… When viewed from above in the Northern Hemisphere hurricane winds rotate counterclockwise. The storm ran alongside the western coast of Florida during Dennis allowing the trapped wave to form. “Because Dennis traveled nearly parallel to the Florida Peninsula coast at the same speed as the wave winds from Dennis amplified the wave” as it traveled northward Morey explained. Though trapped waves are common and have been understood for years “this is the first time it’s made a difference in the hurricane storm surge” Morey said.

A Proposal for Federal Protection From Catastrophe Divides Insurers
New York Times – Oct 31, 2006
“People should understand the risk they face” said Julie A. Rochman a spokeswoman for the American Insurance Association a large industry group. The industry managed to handle $61. 8 billion in losses from Hurricane Katrina and other storms in 2005 and to come back strong this year with record earnings in the first nine months. But the insurers say that was only because they have been pushing up prices along the coasts and reducing their potential losses by refusing to renew policies or to sell new coverage to hundreds of thousands of homeowners along the coasts. The insurers say they also have been doing exceptionally well on auto insurance and investment gains. And they have had a stroke of luck… And they have had a stroke of luck. After a streak of heavy storm activity this year was strikingly mild for hurricanes. Not one hurricane has hit the United States and none are expected before the season ends on Nov. But insurers say that they cannot count on such good fortune in future years. It is not clear how much momentum the legislation has. US rocket shot down Welsh RAF man
Walesnline – Oct 31, 2006
I remember seeing a white fast entity go past my lefthand side. ‘Sqdr Ldr Peter Ward who was co-ordinating the mission from the airbase told the inquest that engineers had reported ‘a missing aircraft’. Initially ground staff believed the missing Tornado GR4 had landed. But US marines saw the Patriot missile strike the aircraft and found the plane with its fuselage mainly intact. The bodies of Flt Lt Main from Burntwood Staffs and Flt Lt Williams were recovered and flown back to the UK. Autopsies carried out on their bodies found they had both died ‘instantaneously’ from multiple injuries. Mr Walker listened to several RAF personnel and said that he was exploring two reasons for why the aircraft was downed.
