(AP) — Hurricanes Charley Floyd and Isabel have wrecked the North Carolina coast in recent years flooding fields and homes stranding people and straining economies. This year brought welcome relief. With a little more than a month remaining in the hurricane season only a handful of relatively tame tropical systems have blown through or near the state. Still following a year when the Atlantic hurricane season saw a record 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes including the massively destructive Katrina those who live closest to the coast haven’t dropped their guard. “We’re still holding our breath” said Susan Paul a 16-year resident of cracoke Island. The season doesn’t end until Nov. 30 — and winter storms are sometimes even more ferocious than their summer counterparts Paul noted… This year brought welcome relief. “With sea level at these higher levels flooding by major storms would inundate many low-lying neighborhoods and shut down the entire metropolitan transportation system with much greater frequency” said Gornitz. As sea levels rise so does the risk of a hurricane storm surge in New York City Gornitz said. Storm surge is an above normal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane. Hurricanes are categorized on the Saffir-Simpson scale from one to five with five being the strongest and most destructive. Rosenzweig and Gornitz’s two year study used the Goddard Institute’s Atmosphere-cean Model a computer program that simulates the Earth’s climate. Based on previous research by Columbia University scientists for the U… 5 feet of sea level rise by the 2050s to the surge for a category three hurricane on a worst-case track would cause extensive flooding in many parts of the city said Gornitz. (Photo courtesy NAA) Areas potentially under water include Lower Manhattan much of southern Brooklyn and Queens portions of Long Island City Astoria Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Queens the Rockaways Coney Island and eastern Staten Island from Great Kills Harbor north to the Verrazano Bridge. For perspective Rosenzweig and Gornitz point to a 1995 study by the U. Army Corps of Engineers which looked at what surge levels for hurricanes of categories one through four would do to the city.
