Homes without electricity after Hurricane Gordon hits the UK
Times nline – Sep 22, 2006
An Atlantic storm fuelled by the end of Hurricane Gordon hit the region bringing down trees and tearing some boats from their moorings. At Dawlish in south Devon the main Penzance to London Waterloo railway line was hit when ballast under one of the two tracks – which run just feet from the coastline – was eroded by the sea. The stretch of track is notoriously vulnerable as waves crash over the sea wall in bad weather and in the past landslides from nearby cliffs have also halted services. Some train services to and from the capital today were starting and finishing at St David’s station in Exeter. Although the remaining track was being used there would be delays said Network Rail adding it was hoped repairs would be completed by this evening… The south-south-westerly storm tracked across Northern Ireland and South West Scotland earlier and moved on through other parts of Britain leadring to heavy rain in some areas. The weekend is expected to be much calmer and drier with above average temperatures. The next hurricane moving across the Atlantic is Helene which this morning was centered about 560 miles (900 kilometers) east of Bermuda. Forecasters say the remains of Helene could cause more wind and heavy rain across the west of Ireland by early next week. The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. September is traditionally one of the busiest months of the season.

It was moving into an area where cooler water and shearing winds were sapping its strength and was expected to complete a northeasterly turn that would prevent it from reaching land. Last year’s Atlantic hurricane season saw a record onslaught of 28 named storms with 15 strengthening into hurricanes. Forecasters initially expected the six-month season that began on June 1 would also be unusually busy. But several factors have combined to make the storms fewer and weaker this year including the presence of Saharan dust over the Atlantic and the development of El Nino conditions.

Almost a year after Hurricane Rita tore through the recreated turn-of-the- last-century “town” near the edge of Lamar University’s campus tarps still cover many of the museum’s buildings and storage trailers sit on the grounds. “We’re going to go in rebuild the exterior of the structures the roofs some of the storefronts a lot of windows some siding” said Lynn Whorton director of facilities planning design and construction for Lamar University. “We partnered with a local engineering firm and we’re just now finishing the design and the construction specs and we’re going to be putting it up for bid probably in the next three weeks.
