That review Looney said will look at whether the equipment was functioning properly the radar data and the quality and timeliness of information sent out about the storm. Asked what he thought of the Weather Service’s performance based on what he knows now Looney said “From everything I can glean the service was good. He stressed that the agency’s rate of tornado detection in the central region is only around 78% primarily because of limitations in technology. In a letter to the inspector general Dayton wrote that the National Weather Service’s own chronology of events indicates “large road sign wrapped around pole” before the tornado struck Rogers. He asked that the inspector general’s review focus on whether the equipment in the Chanhassen office is state-of-the art whether its notification procedures are adequate and whether any of its personnel were culpable. “Never again can an innocent 10-year-old girl’s life be lost while her government’s systems or personnel fail to warn her” he wrote. The girl Jaymi Wendt died at a neighbor’s house when it collapsed… According to the American Red Cross the storm destroyed 17 homes while 48 sustained major damage and 131 had some minor structural damage. City officials have estimated the damage at $15 million to $20 million and said homeowners’ insurance policies should cover most of the losses. The tornado traveled 8 miles starting from 3. 5 miles west of downtown Rogers to Dayton then continued east across the Mississippi River to the city of Ramsey. It was rated F2 meaning it had winds of 113 to 157 mph and was up to 100 yards wide. The weather service typically upgrades a tornado watch to a warning after a spotter reports a funnel cloud rotation shows up on radar or winds reach 75 mph. All tornado warnings come with recommendations that counties activate their sirens in the affected area.

Hurricane Gordon threatens chaos
Fox Sports – Sep 20, 2006
The Europe and US teams both delayed their second practice rounds as the tail end of Hurricane Gordon swept in from the Atlantic cean generating conditions that made opening an umbrella a tricky business far less swinging a three iron. With the course already soaked by torrential rain on Monday and the wild weather expected to continue the terrain could be left too saturated for the match to start on schedule on Friday night (AEST). Bunkers were so wet that anyone landing in them would be left with a virtually unplayable shot and it seems inevitable that the match will be played with preferred lies in operation. Such a ruling allows players to lift their balls from the fairway clean the mud off them and place them back on the turf.
